Florida is inching towards four weeks without a permanent head coach in place. That certainly has caused some uneasiness with a handful of the Gators commitments. 247Sports brings you the latest notes on those that currently seem the shakiest on their pledges.
— Quarterback commit Matt Corral visited Alabama last weekend and had rave reviews about the trip. However, there is another quarterback the Crimson Tide is chasing, who might dictate Bama’s next move at the position - Ohio State commit Emory Jones. Jones has flirted with the Crimson Tide throughout the fall, visiting two games in Tuscaloosa. However, Jones is now looking at Auburn as well, all while still being committed to the Buckeyes. It’s a tricky situation, one Florida faced with Justin Fields and Corral back in the summer.
It should also be noted that there are rumblings that Corral questions his fit in Chip Kelly’s offense, the name many have linked as being the Gators next head coach. Regardless, it’s that uncertainly that remains a bit of an issue. Whoever the next head coach is for UF needs to insure Corral he can operate the new system and the new system will benefit Corral as well. However, there still seems to be limited options for Corral currently. As we have said, perhaps the coaching carousel helps open more for Corral, and a West Coast option would be a serious concern for UF.
— Even before Florida fired Jim McElwain, Alabama was making a serious run at wide receiver commit Jacob Copeland. The buzz coming out of Tuscaloosa shortly after Florida’s coaching change made it seem a flip to the Tide was near. A few weeks have passed and Copeland remains on Florida’s commit list. Perhaps this should be seen as a small win for the Gators. Ultimately, Florida needs to name a new head coach, who will likely be an offensive mind, and convince Copeland the new scheme coming to Gainesville will benefit his career to fend off Alabama.
— Early in Florida coaching search, we had concerns about offensive tackle commit Richard Gouraige’s status with the Gators. He simply refused to discuss anything regarding the coaching change or his recruitment. After doing this for several years, that’s typically not the greatest sign a prospect is locked into his pledge.
Now Gouraige is expected to visit Auburn, a team that was in the mix a bit with the four-star recruit earlier in the cycle. The Tigers have been hot on the recruiting trail of late and they have several Tampa area players on the roster currently. The intel coming out of the Plains regarding Gouraige after this visit will be interesting to follow.
— Cornerback commit Divaad Wilson seems to be torn on a decision at this time with December’s signing period nearing. Wilson visited South Carolina earlier this fall, but the Gamecocks are no longer in the hunt. A visit to Alabama last week drew an offer from the Crimson Tide. Wilson admits Georgia is still very much in the hunt as well.
This recruitment ultimately could come down to Randy Shannon and where his future lies. Shannon offered and committed Wilson back in February. If he remains in Gainesville after the coaching change, the odds drastically improve on keeping Wilson in Florida’s class. If Shannon is not retained by UF, this recruitment really becomes a wildcard.
