We're through game 1 of the season and I'm happy to say it ended the way we all wanted it to. Here's some observations and thoughts.

Offense

  • TVD was sharp. He looked nicked up in the first half, but he came out big in the second half, making some NFL throws (the one one to Restrepo and to Harrel in particular). He was calm and confident.
  • We have a stable of running backs the likes of which we have not had for a very very very long time. You've got four guys in Allen, Chaney, Fletcher, and Parish who would start at other P5 schools. That's a very important metric, do you have guys that would start at other P5 schools. In years past we were lucky to have 1-2 solid options at running back. This year you've got four, and that's not including Johnson or Citizen who have major potential too.
  • The Offensive Line is night and day from last year. They're big, flexible, and can move. We also generated push up front and opened big lanes. Lee, Mauigoa, Cooper, Cohen, Mccoy and the rest of the group played very well. One are that needs fixing is the multiple pre-snap penalties we committed. There were a few third/fourth and shorts that we gave up because of that.
  • The WR's came to play. Colbie Young is THE guy. Great hands, fast as ****, and makes you pay in space. Restrepo, George, and Harrell also looked good. Isaiah Horton had some mistakes, but I think he'll bounce back. He's uber talented.
  • At TE we saw some flashes. Cam McCormick is a **** of a blocker. The TE we got from IMG (I'm blanking on his name) had a great catch.
  • Emory Williams looked very good. Calm, confident, and in complete control of the offense. He went through his motions and made some very nice passes. If he keeps it up, he could very well be the guy. He's got the mental and physical intangibles for it.
  • For once - FINALLY - our scheme fit our personnel. We constantly had guys in motion, and took advantage of our or speed and spacing. Additionally, Dawson made adjustments at half and called a much better game.
  • A&M is a huge challenge next week, but this O has made strides since last season. How much is tbd.
Defense

  • First and foremost, WOW!
  • Was absolutely blown away by our defensive performance. The unit looks completely different top to bottom. Our tackling was monumentally improved. I can't recall us having a missed tackle. We swarmed to the ball and did not let these guys get yac.
  • The DL is improved over last year. LT, Harvey, Bain, etc. played well. We had major penetration and eliminated their running game for the most part. We also put some major pressure on their QB.
  • LB play is the best I've seen here in quite some time. Mauigoa can play. High football IQ and physiciality. Koyd (very surprised with him) and Bisanthe also had great plays. All in all this is a much better unit.
  • We rotated a lot of DB's in and they played extremely well. Davis, the brown bros, Couch, etc. were much better in coverage, swiveled their heads, put their hands up, and made plays on the ball. They were also big in the run game, and at multiple points forced running plays exactly where they needed them to go.
  • What can I say at safety, we've got an all american back there, and Williams was a menace moving all around the field. We're not gonna have any problems at this position this year.
  • Schematically, we were great. I loved our defensive fronts and variation. No stupid stunts or manny nonsense to be found. Lot more variation in our matchups, alignments, and coverages.
  • Guidry was a great hire. Guy coached a defense to beat the vaunted Golden Domers (with far less talent) and tonight was a showing why. He puts his guys in the right place at the right time.
  • This defense will keep you in a lot of games this year. They're not perfect, but it's a huge step up and they will be a very very good unit at the end of the year.
Special Teams
  • Borregales is the man. He's gonna put up a lot of points this year. Got extremely lucky with one kick though.
  • Every Borregales kick off was bombed to the back of the endzone. It's great since it eliminates a potential big play and keeps our guys away from injury.
  • The new Punter played very well. He's got a **** of a foot and he's gonna be another Hedley if he sticks with it.
  • Restrepo made the only terrible special teams play of the game, by fielding a punt inside our five instead of letting it bounce for a touch back. We can't let that happen moving forward.
All in all, this was an A+ performance from our defense, A- performance from our Offense, and A performance from our special teams. Couldn't have asked for a better start to the season, and a win against A&M next week would be a shot in the arm of this school, the likes of which we haven't seen since 2017.

In the September games I would like to see some plays being made on special teams. When we start to have the athletes that can make plays on special teams, we’ll know we are on our way to being an elite team again. Only critique I have of yesterday was that we lost the turnover battle.

To me, Dawson’s playcalling will be the ultimate key. TVD is so much better and relaxed when he doesn’t have to process to much after the snap. Give him the primary read and let X run something on that side of the field as a security blanket. Someone said last night - TVD is a point and shoot guy. At least for this year, slightly adapt the playcalling to allow for more of those types of throws.

Fwiw, Emory isn’t there yet, but dude will allow Dawson to open up the whole playbook with those aforementioned long developing plays. He appears much more comfortable going through progressions and still slinging it comfortably.

I mentioned this somewhere else but rewatching this, I expect a lot more turnovers. Gabbert and the OL were lost but Gabbert is a smart veteran kid and he didn’t force anything.

TBH I think it’s because he hasn’t had the negative developmental trauma of being absolutely destroyed in games at this level by a **** OL. Let’s make sure that remains the case.

The passing game to me was very average for most of the game but that throw in the late 3rd I think from TVD to X was a sign that TVD still has it - just needs to be consistent.

Kiko stood out to me all night not just in the action but barking at the whole defense making calls. Loved that.

I was surprised how little we used the TEs, I hope that changes when Arroyo is back.

I didn’t see much of Skinner and Brashard - I hope those two find a spot here especially Skinner because of his size/speed.

I’m hoping this was because they went vanilla but I do want Dawson to use the middle of the field more. Very few plays to the middle and I don’t want us to just relying on the boundaries with these WRs.

Mark Fletcher. That’s it. Mark. Fletcher.

Watched a well balanced game last night.... Haven't seen that in a while.... That kind of effort on both sides of the ball goes a long way...
That's the kind of stuff that makes recruits want to come here and others flip to us....

I’ve often thought the same about TVD. He needs a quick easy read and let it rip. Otherwise he gets antsy and that’s when he makes mistakes. He needs easy progressions to set up his arm talent.

Did I actually see a Miami Hurricane team come out in the 1st quarter and NOT look lost and lethargic?I cannot believe it. That combined with excellent adjustments at the half is nice.

I think we were very vanilla most of the game because we didn’t want to show T&M anything. Also, why didn’t Skinner play? Couch was getting cooked by that dude in the slot all night, but he tackled well outside of one play. Need to see some other players there. Brassard Smith played plenty of snaps

Brashard took the opening kick-off 40 yards. I consider that a fairly big special teams play. We didn't do anything on punt returns.

Was skinner suspended? Didn’t see him at all. Riley already jump him on the depth chart? Williams is bigger than I thought. We need arroyos catching ability along with Cam blocking for that room to really be well rounded.

Can blocking is a major addition over Mallory.

Skinner drop too many in camp and get passed by @DMoney

George had a sneaky good game as well. Him and young along with X should be enough to win most games. Need a 4th guy to step up out of Harrell, Ray Ray, Horton, Brashard. I’d like to also see us throw to our backs some out of the backfield they can be weapons.
