Game 33: FIU 4/7/26

I’d also say the extent to which the defense, which is difficult to hide, is more problematic of late than the bullpen is because good starting pitching can do wonders to hide a bad bullpen.
OTOH West and Sheahan have probably each saved Bilka from a blown save over the last couple weeks with a late defensive play.

WOW! I fell asleep just after the 3rd, woke up around 0345 and looked at the score. My first spoken words today were 'holy ****.' Made a cup of coffee, then read through this.
I'm actually glad I wasn't awake to see it, my ticker might've given out

Seba the defense is worse than our pen that by the way yesterday was horrendous.
I mean both aren't pretty but here's the way I look at it:

Defensively there are starters I can trust - Torres is coming back soon and is one of the best defensive CF in the conference and up there nationally, Odgen and Sheahan can make plays and Sosa does his job behind the plate. And the guys who aren't up to par defensively make up for it with their hitting (Williams, Cuvet, West). So defensively I know I have an elite CF and plus guys up the middle, where the corners are lacking but hit well.

Bullpen wise I genuinely only trust Dorn at the moment. There's some talent in that room but they have zero confidence or are rehabbing (Menendez can be elite but needs time to get up to speed). What makes the pitching struggles worse is that they cannot "make up for it" which impacts the team worse in my opinion and has costed us more games this season

When the heck is Robert coming back - wasn't his TJ around this time last year?
JD’s last update was that he had fallen three weeks behind Menendez which would put his return next week. Maybe DMoney will get us an update on this week’s show.

Where does Torres fit in to lineup with perraltas surge?

It's baseball, anything can happen. But I just don't see any plausible way this team makes it out of regionals with how bad the bullpen is. Imagine if you lose the first game and you have to burn through pitching like water for the next 3 days? These kids can't get anyone out when they're on full rest. Add JD's cluster**** decision making...big yikes.

Pretty sure the schedule is a total joke the rest of the way, except for FSU, so we might back our way into a 2-seed somewhere, but the way I see it now is this looks like a Sunday early afternoon exit at whichever Podunk town regional we end up in.

Wake is OK, but this weekend is home.
Stanford is awful
Cal is beyond awful
NC State is average, but it is on the road, so that'll be a big series to hopefully win
Louisville isn't any good
FSU

Absolutely zero reason to lose a series for the rest of the regular season, save in Tallahassee.

Let’s say your last sentence turns out correct…. We’re hosting a regional, no?

Good point. Maybe? Who can really say...if we go 2-1 in every single series, sweep Cal, and 1-2 against FSU, probably? 18-12 in the ACC?
Unless we lose all three remaining midweek games (primarily the FIU one from an RPI perspective), 18-12 would almost certainly be enough to host.

I'd take your projection in a heartbeat, which should be a solid 2 seed somewhere if not in the hosting discussion.

Either way, it's all going to depend on how far Robert and Menendez have progressed by the end of May if we're to have any chance of moving to the super round IMO.
