I think one variable being greatly underrated is something that Kevin pointed out, and it relates to us and Golden/NoD's scheme as well.
The transition to the 3-4 when you've got personnel on the roster better suited for a 4-3 is a major undertaking. You have to get bigger across the DL in order to control gaps, you have to find those hybrid players not just at the LB Jack/Rush spot, but you also need to find a physical FS who can come up and be another linebacker in the run game. All of that is tough to recruit for, which is why it takes time to get the pieces you need.
That process to turn the roster over when you're switching schemes is normally 3 or 4 years in order to get the pieces you need to run 3-4 concepts. Grantham might be able to switch things up quickly IF his personnel fits the scheme better than expected, but I doubt it. As for our D, we're just getting to the point to where the roster is turned over and the personnel fits this scheme much better than it did 4 years ago. This year, our D should work with the pieces in place. Grantham is just now starting that process that's taken us 4 years to get to.
Here's to hoping that Grantham finds it to be as great a struggle to install the 3-4 as NoD/Golden has. If that's the case...we could start Isaac Hoza and put 40 up on Loserville.
