Game 1 Hattiesburg Regional: Alabama

Great team win! Pitching, clutch defense when it mattered and timely hitting. And the star players delivered.

Ciscar is a competitor.

Columbia ****es away 2 runs, but should’ve given up more (and also fewer).

6-3, T5

Quite a few teams thought they could just lay their jerseys out there and win. USM is one of them.

Good news for us is Columbia only has one other lefty starter and he’s only started 1 or 2 games. Really glad we avoided the kid who started tonight. Their other 2 weekend guys are righties.

Columbia 11 - USM 4 bottom of 9. The announcers said this is the fourth straight game Columbia has had 15 hits or more. 👀

well ****, that streak hopefully ends tomorrow night against our pitching staff. We cannot give up 15 hits and expect to close out the game with our needed 2nd win.

If Hugus’ arm has freshened up with the extended rest, the door is wide open for us
My thoughts exactly but I’ve always thought extended rest is overblown. Would like to see a study on it from college baseball/MLB and see if a few extra days helps or hurts

For me I thought it always hurt. I would feel too fresh and overthrow and leave it over the plate and get hit. Or it was great early and then crash out around the 4th-5th.

2 best games I ever threw in college were when I bumped from Saturday to Friday starter my junior year and went on a day short of rest and on then the following year first game of conference tournament was on a Wednesday and I threw game 1 of a Friday double header the prior week and went on 2 days short of rest.

Weird how it works out sometimes. I actually remember reading a study when the cardinals were trying to manage Wainwright’s workload late in his career and building him in extra rest and the study said the returns of the benefit was diminished beyond 5 days vs the standard 4 rest days in MLB. He was struggling with 5-6 days of rest and then they put him back on every 5th day with 4 days rest and he had an excellent finish to that season.

Arm chair QB-ing, but I was never a big fan of “saving” your ace. The winners bracket is too big a deal imo. Glad that worked out the way it did
