FSU Hail Mary and our handling of the Hail Mary in general

Because we try to high point and catch the ball instead of knock it down.

There is not a reason in the world that Briggs and/or Parris shouldn't have been out there standing in the endzone.

Dress Shelton Henderson, Cyril, Robert Miller, or even the Birden kid from the basketball team just for this one scenario lol would be a great asset to have available in the playoff.
Yeah, should have put Cantwell, Congdon & Mueller on the goal line. Lol
Point is, our best athlete in the secondary timed & out-leaped FSU’s stud WR. And yes, officials got the call right.

Whoever thinks Deuce landed with control of the ball is just looking to bash us. They had a much better argument on the completed pass with the hold call.

This isn't a cop out at all, we suck at this, obviously. But, and yes I know i'm dumb for not really making this connection in my head until now, but these weren't really "Hail Mary's". There was no clock running down, as is almost always the case in what causes a Hail Mary type play. It wasn't even goal to go. FSU could've gotten a first-down at the 15 yard line.

I was kind of going crazy, especially on the first one, thinking how in the **** Danzy got behind everyone and then really he and Day were the only players on that side of the field. How does that happen on a Hail Mary?? Well, probably because it wasn't a Hail Mary. Sorry, most of you are aware of this, I'm sure. Just in the hoopla of the end of the game and how it played out, with them throwing 2 of these back to back, for some reason in my mind I was treating this like a Hail Mary situation where you have 6 DBs standing in the endzone, and wondering why we didn't. Well, especially on the first one to Danzy before the holding call, it was 4th and 21 from the 36. So yes, we should've been playing soft, but they needed 21 to extend the game, not 36. They just treated it like a Hail Mary and ran around and launched it in the endzone. Twice.

Anyway, like I said most of yall I'm sure know this, it was just a weird ending, obviously. You rarely see a play like that, never mind two of them, where the offense really doesn't *have* to do that. You can try to get a first down, you don't have to throw a total desperation heave. The way they played it for some reason had me thinking after the game and really until this morning that it was a true Hail Mary type situation, score a TD on the last play or lose the game. It wasn't

The biggest problem with this play was an FSU ball boy in all blue raises his hands that it’s a TD and I think everyone assumed that was a ref who did it.

how to:

in action: it's more of the mindset of the defender to attack the ball with your fist and hit it out of bounds.

Everyone is trying to catch it with 2 hands instead of punching / hitting it out of bounds.

That’s what Norvell does. He’s a professional victim. It’s always someone else’s fault. Now we’re going to have to hear them all whine about “The Call” and in addition to “The Snub.” The team and fan base will just fall in line and they will continue to suck because they have no money and no accountability. Dude you haven’t won a road ACC game in 3 years!
And as a result of that he is a miserable failure - kids take notes!

I absolutely hate any hail mary play the same way I hate onside kickoffs. It's one team that's done its job that may get screwed out of a win because the other team has basically left the outcome up to chaos.

Miami is getting s*** on because of an officiating controversy but Miami went into the 2nd OT, ran the ball down FSU's throats, converted the two point conversion, and what does FSU go out and do? Absolutely f***ing nothing and find themselves in 4th and 21. It's only because they heave a literal prayer that it then becomes, "FSU got robbed!!!".

No, FSU didn't get robbed. FSU put themselves in an absolutely terrible position and relied on an insane amount of luck to get themselves out of it. So now, there's no talk that Miami absolutely dominated FSU at the end, which they should get a ton of credit for. It's FSU was robbed because their literal prayer didn't work. And let's completely ignore that they would have had to convert a 2 pt conversion and then go to another OT.

This is how it is done.

I was the first to say we need to use Aussies for punters. I will be first to say that this is how to defend a hail mary.

You use your fist to punch the ball at the high point. If a receiver is about to catch the ball in his hands, you punch the ball.
my concern with that is that you're bouncing it back up....potentially leaving it up for grabs by another receiver that is away from the pile waiting for any deflection of the ball
In AFL this is called a spoil, and I know the games is different but you need to make sure you clear the area with it.

It does land in hands at times but punch it towards to sideline and that ball goes out of play no worries.

I’m Australian, so this is what I grew up playing, but I would rather that than leave it in the refs hands to unpick a pile. You can’t do the bat the ball down to your feet, that is the one that is caught by someone close to the aerial contest.

The smart play would be to slap it outta bounds like Washington did to Texas a few years ago in the playoffs.

Fitzgerald wanted the int to get his NIL up

One thing I was thinking about last night. Having played sports all my life, I wonder if it's easier to go up and try to catch the ball instead of knocking it down. Knocking it down/swatting it away requires timing of hitting the ball just right. You might miss the swipe, you may miss part of the ball and allow it to pop up in the air, etc. Catching it, otoh, is more instinctual and might be "easier" for one to do. JMO.

There are no 100% solutions to anything in football, but trying to catch the ball runs the risk of getting stripped, or bobbling it in a crowd.

Heatherman said they work on end of game twice a week, including Hail Marys.

The last play he said they specifically prepared for because FSU ran it against Bama at the end of the 1H. But defending it was a little different because FSU could still throw shorter for a 1st down so we had to defend that as well. He didn’t have a timeout to go over it. But he said Bryce is supposed to bat that ball down and not try to catch it.

Especially with the depleted secondary, seems like they should consider adjusting personnel in Hail Mary situations. Day in particular seemed pretty limited.

I would like to hear his answer on the prior play where two defenders let Danzy get positioning and watch him catch it. Either were in position to knock that ball down while both should have knocked the **** out of him.
