Franklin Fired at PSU

From someone on the Nebraska On3 board

Rhule played and coached there,

He worked at Temple with PSU AD Craft

He helped Craft get the PSU job.

Not as far fetched as it might seem.
It is far-fetched, you think they’re paying $50 million to bring in a guy that really has no chance of winning a national championship. Maybe if they strike out on their main targets but I believe Penn State is going big here. You don’t pay $50 million just to go small.

I think this was a mistake for PSU.
Not a mistake if you ever wanna win a national championship because Franklin was never gonna bring that to them. 2017 and this year we’re supposed to be PSU’s years and we see what happened.

Since 2018, Franklin has produced 8 first rounders and 10 second rounders.
Plenty of talent to win a national title, but he just can’t get him over the hump. 2017 and this year we’re supposed to be there year and we see how that is ended. I like Franklin, but some coaches either have it, or they don’t. That is talking about winning a title.

Matt Rhule is a fools gold coach. He's not terrible by any means, but he likely interviews very well, is part of the good ol boy network of coaches, but the results are middy city.

Mario is a better coach than Matt Rhule. James Franklin is, too. 5 Top 10 finishes after inheriting a ****show pedo scandal school in 10 full seasons. Half of his seasons he finished in the Top 10. SEVEN he finished in the Top 20. 6-6 in post-season fare, including 2-1 in the CFP.

They aren't finding better than that...especially not with Matt Campbell or Matt Rhule or Al Golden.

MAYBE they could with Cignetti, but you should be happy with just a push there.

If there is one school that should be checking their couch cushions right now and getting their money lined up...it should be MARYLAND. All in, highest and best offer for Franklin. He'd have them in the upper half of the B1G quickly.

Listening to Josh Pate. He spent the first 20 minutes on Franklin's firing. He basically said it's a big mistake. Wonders who they think they will get that will be better.

Since they have to have a coach, Matt Campbell would be a good choice , in his opinion

Campbell would be a good fit and he needs to get out of Ames ASAP.

Interesting podcast. Rece Davis, Pete Thamel and Dan Wetzel dissect the firing of Franklin, looking at it from a number of perspectives. They also reflect on how this is a product of the changes in college football to date and what it potentially means for coaching contracts going forward.

I'm not normally a big fan of Rece Davis; primarily due to his persona on Game Day . But he's different on this podcast format. It's a biweekly (I believe) podcast and since I've started listening, it's been good.

Woth a listen if you have some time on a rainy day (at least up here in the Northeast!)

James Franklin is an ELITE recruiter in the DMV and PA/NJ area. Makes me wonder if he wants to go back to UMD if Locksley finally gets fired. James Franklin was Maryland’s AHC/OC/QB coach before becoming an HC for the first time in his career at Vandy. I could see UA’s Kevin Plank and his bros emptying their pocket for Franklin.

If I recall Franklin was the Coach-in-Waiting at Maryland with assumption that Ralph Friedgen was going to "voluntary" retire soon (he was being encouraged). But Friedgen balked at retirement and it apparently got awkward between Franklin, Friedgen and the folks supporting one of the two coaches. So Franklin moved on.
Locksley was and is a stellar recruiter and does decent job of finding coaches but is not a good gameday coach.
Franklin would be an improvement, although he has fired his share of coaches these last few years so I wonder if he has burned bridges.
