His teams got soft. Very common for an older coach.
I happened to be in the Blacksburg area in late summer 2009. I decided to check out their campus. Mostly I wanted to see the area where the shootings occurred in 2007.
Little did I know that a football scrimmage was scheduled for that afternoon in Lane Stadium. What luck. I walked in, wearing a Canes shirt, mostly by coincidence. I immediately received stares and one, "Can you believe that?"
I couldn't believe how physical they were. Both sides of the ball, and particularly the straight ahead running game. Such a vast difference from the tinkerbell approach so familiar from Canes spring games.
Fast forward one month, to late September. Miami is a 3 point favorite at Blacksburg. Are you kidding me? I had emphasized the difference in physical style from that scrimmage on the Miami free board at Rivals.
Game was predictably a physical massacre, fitting with the difference in styles and emphasis. Virginia Tech won 31-7. I think we complained about Jimmy Graham dropping the ball, and similar trivia.
Six years later and the Hokies are sad. Instead of imposing their physicality they are running the same shotgun finesse crap that we have resorted to. Again, very familiar with an older coach. They don't appreciate the dirtywork anymore, not when leisure will do.
I attended the Thursday night game at Blacksburg last season and heard the complaints from nearby Hokie fans. We have lost defensive tackles in this era. The Virginia Tech fans told me it was the opposite for that program, that Beamer had lost his touch with offensive linemen and therefore his old physical run oriented style was gone, desperately replaced by slight of hand. You might remember that even when they routed us here in 2013 it was mostly third down underneath crossing routes, not power football.
