Former UGA LB Coach Mike Ekeler Exit Interview

On what if anything you’d change about college football coaching if you could …

People talk about hiring great recruiters; I think that’s an absolute joke. If you’re labeled that, 99 percent of the time that means you can’t coach a lick. That’s a fact. There are very few exceptions. Ed Orgeron is a fantastic recruiter and he’s probably the best defensive line coach of them all. The guy is big-time. It’s great to recruit 5-stars, but then they come in and play like 2-stars. It’s too bad that’s how this profession is, but that’s part of the deal now.

“It’s not about recruiting, it’s about evaluating. That’s one of the things I learned from Ed Orgeron. It doesn’t matter if he’s a 2-star or a 5-star, it’s how you evaluate it and what you think you can do with him. That’s what I learned from him. Again, you recruit them. But there’s only about five players in the country that are totally different than everybody else. Everybody else can fall into a similar category. At that point it’s about developing and teaching. It’s about evaluating and developing your talent. And that’s a fact.”

Stopped reading when he started saying Brian Schottenheimer was a great coach.

dust the dirt of your shoes go get a new job...you don't win throwing shade at the coaching fraternity...

just go to work...try to be the best of both worlds...

Agreed. There's quite a few members of our previous staff that could sling a lot of crap about Al and D'Onof but it's just not professional.

He went out like a ***** in my book.

He also said ****tenheimer was a good coach , so he's a ***** and retarded

James Coley is labeled a recruiter, and we know he sure as **** can't coach a lick! Same for most of our old staff. Hopefully the young guys on our new staff are more than just recruiters.

Coley can coach QBs...his skills as an OC were his downfall.

I've yet to see Kaaya grow in any aspect in the game. The kid is just a great talent right now. I'm ready to see what he's going to do now that Richt will be handling his development.

He will become long and lean....just how AL likes'em

He can recruit qbs good and other players as well. He can identify talent but his ability to coach qbs is overrated. Look how Morris played vs his junior year. And people are quick to forget this and yes kaaya had played great these two years but it's not all on coley by any means. Remember his personal qb coach is Rudy carpenter.... He has been coaching him for years...

BINGO.

I made this point a few months ago when people were talking about Wario Cristobal.

Everything he said about recruiting is 100% true, and it's to be tacked at the top of this board.
