Alabama quarterback Blake Barnett transferring | AL.com

Alabama's opening game starter at quarterback is no longer with the team.
Redshirt freshman Blake Barnett is transferring and has left the program, sources told AL.com.

While the former five-star recruit opened the season as the Tide's starter, he was pulled following the second series of that opening game in favor of freshman Jalen Hurts.
Barnett had been Hurts' backup since that first game.

Barnett appeared in three of the first four games. He was 11 of 19 for 219 yards with two touchdown passes and no interceptions, including 4 of 7 for 55 yards with a touchdown during Alabama's 48-0 win over Kent State on Saturday.

The California native was the No. 2 pro-style quarterback and No. 21 overall prospect in last year's recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Got beat out by a true freshman. Probably wouldn't see the field other than garbage time or if Hurts got injured. Not surprised.

They're young & impressionable... Easily manipulated... And most likely front runners who only want to be with a program that has guaranteed success.

Of course $$$$$ plays a huge part in it as well, but if you're an elite 5-star prospect and you want playing time, Bama is the last place you should sign, especially if you have no local or regional ties to the program.

But, it's the lesson those kids have to learn the hard way... Bama while recruiting you will promise you the world, then once you get there in the program, you're not special anymore... You're just another cog in the machine, so either get to the back of the line or transfer & mess up your career.

Because like Jalen Hurts proved it, you can start as a true freshman at Bama, even if they signed 5* at previous class. It's rare, but it can happens and every kid will think they are the next coming and that they can do it too.

Barnett was overrated and he got beat by a younger player than him, nothing he could change when he made the decision to sign with Bama.

I'd say after watching him in game one second half he has a great arm and great touch. With right QB coach he will be very good.

I don't think Hurts is anything special. Maybe the dumpster fire that is SC will want him back in Cali. Maybe Cal, Fresno St, SDSU or some program of that ilk. Sooner or later some Fortay like parents will end up being the catalyst for Saban calling it. Just my $0.02.
