What Coach Richt accomplished last year was possibly the best coaching job in the history of the program when everything is factored in, which is why the experts awarded him coach of the year. There is no way to wave a recruiting wand over the nation's recruits and suddenly they will be clamoring to become Canes, especially when competing against monstrous, well oiled (money) recruiting machines that now dot the college football landscape.

Notice that with Coach Richt's recruits Kirby came close to capturing a National Championship, yet now with Coach Richt's recruits moving on, they've struggled.
