Not satisfied with a consensus top-five recruiting class, the Miami Hurricanes have landed a commitment from A’mir “A1” Sears — previously the number one overall player in the 2028 class before his reclassification into the 27 class.



Despite reclassifying a year ahead of schedule, Sears remained a five-star prospect industry-wide as a two-way phenom at wide receiver and cornerback.

At 6-foot- and 180-pounds, Sears possesses some of the best ability in the country on both sides of the ball.

The South Florida superstar has the video game-like ability to make highlight reel plays all over the field in the same manner of college football’s last two-way star — Heisman winner Travis Hunter.

Last season at West Broward, he notched 61 tackles, 11 pass breakups and three interceptions on defense to go along with 49 catches for 942 yards and 11 touchdowns on offense.

As a cornerback, Sears has it all.

He’s a physical, rangy defensive back who is unafraid to take risks to make plays on the ball whether it's in the air or on the ground. Moreover, Sears uses his strength and wingspan to knock opposing wide receivers off their routes and gets his hands in the air to swat passes away.



While less polished as a wideout, the same athleticism that lets him shine on the defensive end stands out offensively.

Sears possesses an innate ability to win 50/50 balls at a high clip despite his relatively wiry frame, reeling in circus-style catches along the sidelines. And while less flashy, he brings a consistent pair of hands to target in open space before using his speed to make defenders miss.



But what’s most impressive about Sears is his instincts — a style of play which garners comparisons to the best prospects of the last few cycles, especially South Florida ones.

Like future teammate Malachi Toney and fellow Miami WR commit Nick Lennear, Sears has a presence in the community where his name is like the stuff of legend.

Top South Florida Talent is staying home.

When speaking to CanesInSight earlier this summer, Sears emphasized his relationship with a wide contingent of the UM coaching staff — a staff that gave him his first Division one offer back in 2024 ahead of his freshman season.

"My relationship with Coach [Cristobal] is great. I've known him for a very long time,” said Sears. “Coach Terry [Jefferson] and Will [Harris] are the same too … Frank Tucker and Joe [Brown] are my guys."

“They are great people.”

And while wide receivers coach Kevin Beard and cornerbacks coach Terry Jefferson playfully joke with Sears that they’re gonna convince him to join their side of the field, the five-star athlete has a real green light to play both sides at the next level.

Ahead of what will now be his final high school season following his reclassification, Sears transferred to Christopher Columbus High school. And while former players such as defensive standout Bryce Fitzgerald haven’t been able to enroll early, all signs point toward the two-way star enrolling at the University come December.

Sears becomes Miami’s 21st commit after choosing the Hurricanes over the likes of Texas A&M, LSU and Michigan, further cementing a statement class for Cristobal and co. which now boasts five five-star prospects.

Miami’s 2027 class will essentially include three of the top-10 corners in the country with Sears in the mix (Donte Wright & Ai’King Hall), making for a historic secondary haul.

So what is the hope Champ Bailey or Travis Hunter.... Maybe Chris Gamble or Adoree Jackson...

I view Hunter as more of an impactful WR in college level while the others were more firmly CBs that also did WR. I think Sears is more likely to be in the other 3 group than Hunter for us. But who knows, cause with what we got at WR and CB aint like theres any glaring hole that we will need him to fill. It'll just be whatever he can contribute. As a frosh it'll probably end up being pretty even.

As far as people saying he's going to start next year as a TF, that's not happening, but he's a talented prospect with room to grow.

In terms of pure CB skills/ability, he's very raw & needs a ton of refinement from a technical standpoint.

But by year 2, after adding weight & strength, he should be competing for reps at Boundary.

As of today this is what the 2027 DB room would look like. Obviously we don't know which of the current dbs will end up declaring early or just portalling out.... but god ****.

Just see him being that kind of presence. Not shy of contact and going to cover insane amounts of ground on the field. This kid isn’t even close to what he will be in 1 to 3 years. More important than wright IMO

Bro, I am like, living stunned right now, as a Canes fan that went to English Class at the U with Bernie Kosar, its like.... we are BACK. Its surreal, I literally never thought I would live to see this day again. This has been a Looooong time comin.

This has that 00-01 feeling. I’m obviously not saying this team is 01 caliber but what I mean is in 00 everyone knew we let one slip away and by the end of that year, Miami was the best team in the country and if given the opportunity, we dog walk that OU team that won the Natty. 01 comes around and everyone had one mission and it feels like this year could be that. Making another deep playoff run/playing for a Natty/winning a Natty and watch out!!! 5-10 run like you mention isn’t out of the question.
