There are some good coaches on his side of the ball that are also loved by players and their parentsWhy would he take anyone? He didn’t hire anyone on this staff and has zero prior experience with any of them. Like I said, maybe he brings a position coach and gives him the “OC who doesn’t call plays” title but otherwise, I just don’t see it.
Please, guy who knows everything. Explain why he’s taking a bunch of coaches here instead of just hiring his own personal choices when he gets to SMU?
Both Coaches have been OC’s and Likens is a very good WR coach. Likens especially is not that difficult to see that as a good move. Why would he take anyone? We laugh but bandas defense is better than mannys lolThis **** would be hilarious
Looks like some of the staff is going with Dykes:Lash is taking two support staff guys who were with him at SMU, Jonathan Brewer & Kyle Cooper.
Brewer was a QC Analyst who's worked as an assistant QB's coach, assisted WR's at Auburn with Lash & Kodi Burns & worked with OL's at UConn with him too & Cooper was a GA who worked alongside the OL at SMU.
It’ll be interesting to see if he takes Likens with him, because Likens got fired from his last two spots as OC at Kansas & AZ St because he wasn’t a good play caller, but maybe he & Lash have developed a good relationship.
If David Gru sticks at SMU he could continue being an WR’s coach for him.
It’ll be pivotal for him to keep Ra’Shaad Samples, he may have to give him the OC title to keep him, but Samples is an elite recruiter even at SMU, so losing him would put him behind the 8ball in Dallas area recruiting.
He could bring back Kevin Kane from Illinois as his DC if Kane is interested, but he’s a Midwest guy & maybe he likes it on Bielema’s staff lol
For OC, he could call on Chad Morris who went back to coaching HS ball down in Texas at Allen, but was at SMU before Rhett got there & is from the same Gus Malzahn tree.
If he wants a high octane Air Raid guy, Cody Crill would be a perfect fit at SMU. Ryan Carty would be another one.
Ultimately, I think he’s going to get a bunch of his Arkansas & Auburn guys he came up with to help bolster his staff.
Samples is gonna kill it at TCU.Looks like some of the staff is going with Dykes:
*** Sonny Dykes will coach on Saturday in his final game with the program before heading to Ft. Worth to take over at TCU, sources tell Pony Stampede. What we do know is that outside of one coach, who has an opportunity elsewhere, the entire staff is remaining with the program for the bowl game, we're told. When Chad Morris left SMU with a skeleton staff a few years back, that wasn't lost on SMU's administration or Dykes. Expect the staff to remain together for the bowl game, but Dykes will not be a part of it.
*** We can confirm that assistant head coach Ra'Shaad Samples will follow Dykes to TCU as will strength and conditioning coach Kaz Kazadi. Both turned down larger offers moneywise from SMU to remain with the program. Samples coordinated the mass decommitment wave we watched on Wednesday and for whatever reason, felt that was the way to handle that. He won't be taking on an OC role at TCU.
*** One thing I will note is that when Morris left for Arkansas (and we reported this), he and his staff took everything. Laptops, iPads, camera equipment and also erased the servers of everything SMU Football had done under Morris. Dykes and his staff won't be doing anything like that. It'll be a peaceful transition when that comes after the clocks hit 0:00 on Saturday as SMU will move quickly with its next coach. Regardless of how poorly this ended up looking, Dykes and his staff aren't burning the place to the ground.
*** Miami offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee is the next SMU head coach, sources tell Pony Stampede. Like Dykes for TCU, Lashlee has been working two jobs at this point, working on his next staff. It's the ugly business of coaching as changes are now made earlier than ever. Like Dykes wanted to keep Samples, Kazadi and others, Lashlee wanted them to stay with the program. It's the jockeying this time of year that makes for quick coaching changes after the season. We will have more information on Lashlee's staff coming together once other coaches finish out their regular seasons.
Ultimately, I think he’s going to get a bunch of his Arkansas & Auburn guys he came up with to help bolster his staff.
