Finally Admit Lanning > Mario

You raise an excellent point with the QBs - Coaches are really good when they have really good QB play.
And good coordinators. To your point, Mario made some bad choices early before striking gold. When Dawson leaves, hopefully Mario has learned.

Lanning’s biggest mistake in my opinion was promoting Mehringer. He has an NFL quarterback and elite WR talent, get a guy who has called plays before.

Because Manny won 7 games and people thought Mario would at least do that including an MTSU win not loss. He had what 247 said was the 12th most talented roster in that year so people thought he’d at least get wins commensurate with the talent he had per 247.
This is exactly what majority of us all thought, and i still think if mario doesn’t hire gattis year1 we don’t go 5-7 but those hires failing put him on the right course

Steele had to go too but i think the problem with him was more about talent and culture, hiring vets like steele & strong to help rebuild the culture wasn’t a really bad choice like gattis was. They just weren’t long term solutions like what we have now

Difference between mario and lanning is, mario bumped his head with hires early but corrected the course. Lanning made great hires early but bumped his head in year 5, the worst possible time to do that because they have a top7 roster and probably won’t make the playoffs

Hot Take:

It is much easier to be a “good” coach when you have a great quarterback. Just ask DMoney about Bill Belichick.

When Lanning was the “better” coach, he had Bo Nix and Dillon Gabriel. Now Mario is the “better coach” and he’s had Ward, Beck and now Mensah.

Yes there is more that matters but It’s not really rocket science.

No one is even bothering to take into account that Lanning lost to UCLA with his backup QB? Are we confident we’d beat Wake with Luke Nickel?

One could even argue that Mario learned to poach experienced quarterbacks from Lanning.

Trajectory is a fickle beast when there is no roster depth at football’s most important position.
UCLA lost their starter in that game...

I do think Mario > Lanning because the roster-building, particularly on the line, gives Mario the edge.

That said, I previously defended Mario in this thread early on, now I'll defend Lanning.

Coaches hitch their wagon to the QB. Great QB play=coach looks like a genius. The examples of this go on forever. Everyone thought Jeff Fisher was a great head coach when he had Air McNair and then once he's gone, he's relegated to coaching in the USFL or wherever the heck he was. Look at Belichik's reputation without Brady. Dabo was on top of the world when he had Taj Boyd and Deshaun and Trevor Lawrence and now with mediocre QB play since, they're headed for a divorce. Charlie Strong parlayed Teddy Bridgewater into a Texas gig. Heck, Norvell owes Jordan Travis a lot of money. We can play this game forever.

Give Lanning Bo Nix and he's going to look really good.

But Dante Moore? Oregon has become Dante Moore. Lots of promise, allure, and potential but actual performance, meh.

Conversely, BTW, Mario has killed it with Ward, Beck, and now Mensah.

Obviously, Mario is an elite recruiter but I don’t think Dawson gets enough credit. His system is QB friendly and is attractive to any potential transfer QB.

Agree on your overall QB take. However when you said “no one is even bothering to take into account that Lanning lost to UCLA with his backup QB,” you conveniently omitted that the same backup QB (who played dreadfully against UCLA) played amazingly the week before against USC. Talk about fickle.

I agree with your overall take but you can’t say Miami killed it with Beck but Moore is meh when they put up identical stats last year.

Moore had 9 touchdowns and zero picks this year. He’s a Top 10 college QB without argument when healthy.

You are saying this because Miami is winning. If/when they lose a game they shouldn’t, the tune will change again.
I’m willing to bet it doesn’t happen until at the least the playoffs this year lest injury Mensah

Slim chance we get beat by ND but ai could live with it if we still win the ACC

You willing to make a silly wager! Loser has to post an embarrassing video of the others choosing?

What’s crazy is Moore was a consensus Top 5 Qb by everyone based off his play last year n dude has looked like he actually regressed this szn which is wild

Sometimes you have to take a chance. If you’re an elite recruiter, you’re worth your weight in gold. If (when) Heatherman leaves for HC position, JT will get a promotion because he’s so **** important on the trail and has earned that chance.

I guess you could argue Beck's impact but he took us to the NC so from my perspective, that's a big win.

This post from the OP about Lanning being better then Mario aged horribly. Mario has grown nicely as coach. We are in good hands right now. Go Canes!

This is such a disingenuous post

Lanning had a potential number one pick last year, he got absolutely bulldozed by Indiana

He had the same qb this year, got packed up by a team that lost a Tulsa

That backup quarterback you mentioned? Two year starter at Nebraska and the number one, overall a quarterback of his class.

TrumpCane wants to know if you have not followed Oregon? They’ve had good quarterbacks, bad excuse

If trajectory at point zero matters, why are you citing the 2019 FIU game and the 2020 UNC game while ignoring what happened immediately before Mario arrived?

Miami finished 2021 by winning five of its final six games, including wins over ranked NC State and Pitt. TVD threw for at least 300 yards and three touchdowns in six straight games. That was the actual trajectory at point zero.

I acknowledge that the program was far from perfect and that Lanning came into a better situation at Oregon than Mario did at UM, however, describing UM as structurally rotten and claiming 60% of the roster was not worth keeping is a subjective, after-the-fact explanation for why Mario took a 7–5 team, replaced roughly 40% of its roster and went 5–7.

If 60% was not worth keeping and Mario replaced most of the rest, that makes the 5–7 result more deserving of criticism, not less.

No, I'm actually claiming ~100% of the roster wasn't worth keeping; the initial 40% and a vast majority of the 60% that remained.

'Winning five of the final six games' sounds impressive until you realize we finished that year 7-5.
