Finally Admit Lanning > Mario

You raise an excellent point with the QBs - Coaches are really good when they have really good QB play.
And good coordinators. To your point, Mario made some bad choices early before striking gold. When Dawson leaves, hopefully Mario has learned.

Lanning’s biggest mistake in my opinion was promoting Mehringer. He has an NFL quarterback and elite WR talent, get a guy who has called plays before.

Because Manny won 7 games and people thought Mario would at least do that including an MTSU win not loss. He had what 247 said was the 12th most talented roster in that year so people thought he’d at least get wins commensurate with the talent he had per 247.
This is exactly what majority of us all thought, and i still think if mario doesn’t hire gattis year1 we don’t go 5-7 but those hires failing put him on the right course

Steele had to go too but i think the problem with him was more about talent and culture, hiring vets like steele & strong to help rebuild the culture wasn’t a really bad choice like gattis was. They just weren’t long term solutions like what we have now

Difference between mario and lanning is, mario bumped his head with hires early but corrected the course. Lanning made great hires early but bumped his head in year 5, the worst possible time to do that because they have a top7 roster and probably won’t make the playoffs

Hot Take:

It is much easier to be a “good” coach when you have a great quarterback. Just ask DMoney about Bill Belichick.

When Lanning was the “better” coach, he had Bo Nix and Dillon Gabriel. Now Mario is the “better coach” and he’s had Ward, Beck and now Mensah.

Yes there is more that matters but It’s not really rocket science.

No one is even bothering to take into account that Lanning lost to UCLA with his backup QB? Are we confident we’d beat Wake with Luke Nickel?

One could even argue that Mario learned to poach experienced quarterbacks from Lanning.

Trajectory is a fickle beast when there is no roster depth at football’s most important position.
UCLA lost their starter in that game...
