Felipe Franks / UF bowl game

Bullsh*t. Under Jackie Sherrill, Miss St finished 3rd or better in the SECW four times between '92 and '99. He even took them to the SEC championship game in '98.

Mullen never took Miss St to the SEC championship game and he finished 4th or worse in the SECW every year besides '14.

Yes, Miss St was pretty bad when Mullen got there because Croom was a dumpster fire, and they got better under Mullen...but this idea that he did something unprecedented is a fantasy.

Good catch on Sherrill. Definitely a lot of gaytor fantasy wishful thinking going on about Mullet’s coaching prowess

I REALLLLLY hope their Oline issues are true and even worse than expected because you would think with their skill guys, experience, and 2nd year in system they could be in line for a really good offense. Obviously their qb is a wildcard, they dont ask him to do much but he finished year on high note which allowed him to go into offseason with confidence and knowledge that he was the leader.

Like mentioned earlier if you watch enough of their O, its mullens/urban system all the way (spread to run, option with running qb to grease the wheels). I would even say they have guys who do their best Tebow/Harvin impressions in Felipe/Coney. Both are lesser versions but you can see it. They have some solid experienced guys at the skill position. They have a bunch of WR (Jefferson, Cleveland, Hammond, Swain, Grimes, etc.) that contribute in their system. Jefferson is their #1, They look to get Grimes the ball too. Swain is probably their big play guy. Perine is the workhorse at RB, solid player with experience and Kadarius Toney is athlete who plays Harvin role that they move around and get him ball all over field, running, catching, wildcat, etc. He jumps out on film and is explosive with ball in hands.

Their o is mainly run, they want to spread to run and then will have restraint plays to keep you honest with numbers in box (screens, swing passes, slants) They dont ask much of qb, he also runs the ball pretty effectively (they dont need much from him, maybe 3 yards on 3rd n short or down in redzone). Anytime on film he is asked to make reads or take a deeper drop he panics or makes a bad throw. Their offense is to control the ball and stay ahead of chains. They usually play with lead which also allows to stay in gameplan. Most passes are quick screens, swings, slants, curls, maybe a out a occasional post. Surprisingly they didnt take many shots deep which used to be a staple in the Urban/Tebow era with louis murphy, riley cooper and Harvin. Maybe they add it to offense if the qb develops but its not on film from last season.

Im hoping we can stuff the run and take away the easy screen yards from them, force them to have to put the game in their qb hands. Obviously with us replacing most of DBs he could still be efficient but that is best case. Their O isnt scary but Perine is good effective and I would think they will use Coney more this season, have to account for him at all times. Might watch Defense next but wanted to see what their O looked like because of buzz they have gotten. They replace alot of oline but unlike us they arent freshman tackle types and seem to have been in program, with the way they run their O, they can be hidden as arent doing 5 step drops and asked to hold blocks. I hope the replacements suck and we can eat

I watched the UF vs Miss St game last year and took note of how UF dis their damage. They love throwing the WR screen on 1st and MSU did a very poor job dealing with it. The DB’s did not protect the sideline and force it back inside towards the pursuit, giving UF a solid 6+ yards almost every time. That shouldn’t happen with Bandy and our aggressive defense as we usually play the screen well.

They also use QB draw to get into 2nd or 3rd and short situations, especially used they have a 2nd and 10. Franks is a pretty good runner so we will need to watch out for it. Hopefully we don’t get caught with our pants down stunting our DL.

Switching to the defensive side of things, Grantham almost exclusively played man coverage last season. Have to love our match up there, especially as you go further down the line with our WRs. Man coverage also leaves their LBs on Jordan, Mallory and Dallas which is begging to be abused badly. If Tate wins the job that’s just another way we can exploit man coverage as he’ll find plenty of times to put his head down and run.

Give me an above average OL performance and a QB who doesn’t panic when his first read isn’t there and we’re in serious business.

I watched their bowl game again, and knowing all of the guys they lost, it blows my mind how much hype UF is getting.

Franks is a sneaky runner that could hurt us if we don’t account for him

Perrine is a very nice back that is really good catching the ball. He caught about 5 swing and screen passes in the game.

Reality:

It seemed like over half their passing plays were some sort of screen or slant. Our DBs will need to be ready to tackle. Any sort of intermediate to deep developing routes and Franks looked very uncomfortable with bad throwing mechanics.

Although he is at risk to run, Franks is awful in the red zone with very poor vision. This is the overall trend with him as a passer, one read and throw, anything more and the wheels fall off for him.

I wasn’t overly impressed with UFs corners. More often than not, they were beaten by jump ball and back shoulder type throws, below average ability to find the ball. I expect our WRs and TEs to have a good showing.

I’ll give Mullen credit in putting together a solid game plan around Franks and his limited ability. With our speed and strength in the front 7 [Im calling for a Romeo Finley and our Bandy pick 6], I fully expect that we will stop what they are trying to do on Offense and force Franks to beat us with downfield passing... which he will fail miserably at.

Can’t wait for the season to start and go 1-0.
This take is crazy on point 🎯🎯🎯. I agree and noticed all of this.

anyone who thinks that Florida will be a walk in the park is delirious. It will similar to LSU, except with hopefully better coaching and offensive and ST performance from UM. Don´t get me wrong, we could have won that game and definitely can win this game, but it will be challenge and we will have to play our A game. Go Canes.
This time we won't have Feagles and his 10 yard punts. What a horrible punter.

I stand corrected. I did forget about Jackie Sherrill. However, the central point remains. Mullen can coach and he did have Miss. St. ranked briefly in the top 5 a few years back.
