Fall Practice Summary- Day 3

View as article
QB play:

Overall, the QBs played similar to how they did on Saturday. The things that they did well, they continued to do well. Same for the things they struggled with. The most significant difference is that Martell started the practice off poorly, but he improved as the day continued. He clearly is more comfortable passing to Osborn and the tight ends.

Jarren Williams continued to be the most consistent of the three quarterbacks. Specifically, when throwing the corner routes, Williams was feeling it.

For the second day in a row, Perry did not have a great showing. On the short to intermediate routes, Perry was throwing well but was by no means perfect. Perry continued to struggle with the downfield throws, especially when the receiver is working the sideline. Both yesterday and today, his passes drifted out of bounds and gave the receiver no chance to make a play.

Other Notes:

Freshman TE Larry Hodges looked to be moving very well and was impressive as a route runner, including some downfield routes.

Keontra Smith and Te’Cory Couch both looked good in coverage and are both extremely physical. They do not seem to be intimidated by the college level at all.

Al Blades was the only player to hit 20 MPH during the media viewing portion of practice. He did so while covering KJ Osborn.

The ‘Big Cane’ returned for the first time that we know of this fall. This is my best guess on some of the matchups and outcomes:

KJ Osborn and Robert Knowles ended in a stalemate.
Jeff Thomas and DJ Ivey ended in a stalemate.
Jakai Clark won twice, once was against Jalar Holley.

Some 1v1 results:

Al Blades beat KJ Osborn
Jeff Thomas beat Trajan Bandy
DJ Ivey beat Mark Pope
Christian Williams beat Jeremiah Payton
Keontra Smith beat KJ Osborn
Evidence Njoku beat Al Blades
Robert Knowles beat Marshall Few
Nigel Bethel beat Dee Wiggins
Outstanding overview Matthew! As always, thank you very much.

Wonder what’s up with Perry? It is just day 3 but still. He started 6 games last year and should be a little further ahead with some of this stuff you would think. Jarren updates are pretty positive but he’s obviously got things he can work on. Martell needs to get consistent. From the videos today both Martell and Perry had throws that were off the mark. But regardless all of them seem to be showing some positive things and certainly some negative things. They got to get acclimated with throwing with pads on too so some of this stuff is probably expected. Will see how everything goes over the next 2 weeks or so.

Perry simply is not a good quarterback on multiple levels.

Opening day starter according to the fans throughout Camp, following daily media reports:

Jarren Williams - will be named starter by the fans 19% of the time
Tate Martel, will be named starter by the fans 46.17% of the time
Kosi Perry, will be named starter by the fans 34.83% of the time

Reasonable forecast...May the best man win!!!

Looks like the Russians are at it again.

This is from gaby urrutia and seems over pessimistic given that the media only sees a portion of practice. His report sounds different from what suero had all together too.

only report that says that at all. wonder if he was at the same practice...

If the media viewing portion is just guys running routes with no defense then it doesn’t surprise me that Jarren is the most consistent.

You won’t see the real QB step up until there’s a DLine in there face and they have to go through their progressions

If they can't throw it without defense in their face what you think they're going to do with defense? So I'll take who can throw it now

Bethel beat Evidence Njoku? Bethel gives up 8” and 50 lbs in that conflict.

Good for the little guy. Must have used great leverage. Not so good for Evidence.
