Fall Practice Summary - Day 1

View as article
Everybody's going to trip out over Nelson being the starting LT & I get that because he's a TF...

But I may be the only one who feels this way but Herbert is a big time concern for me at RT & yall know I'm the last one to worry... But he's never been good at dealing with speed rushers ever since he was in HS at AH, that was always his weakness.

Not saying he can't or won't improve, just saying everybody will focus on Zion but Herbert IMO is the one we need to see play well & anchor down that RT if he's the starter.

And nah I'm not panicking or overreacting, just simply saying that's something to keep an eye on as one of the question marks for the season.
This may change as these pre-opening practices continue.

Interesting that the OP says Tate looked best, but his description of what happened at practice seems that Kosi was the man.
Based on the Diaz interview, I'm getting the feeling he's just handing the job to Martell talking about his Summer workouts. How can he justify Martell as #1 at the first Fall practice based on some summer workouts that are not even official? It's as though the Spring practices didn't matter. Summer workouts prepare you to earn the job in the Fall. You can't earn it in the Summer workouts. I'd expect all 3 to have equal time with the 1's. If not, then this isn't really a competition.

I'll really be interested in the pecking order at QB over the next few days.

Said yesterday in the podcast:

We know three guys are gonna start on the OL in Donaldson, Scaife and Gaynor. We probably only know two positions, though. Donaldson is going to be a guard, probably Left. Gaynor is going to be a Center. Scaife can realistically end up at LT, RT or RG. Expect a lot of movement in the OL in the next two weeks. Luckily, we have all the DE styles to test the Tackles because, again, that Tackle combo is what will create the domino effect for remainder of line.

I was at orlando game and thought Few was a St Barrios type receiver... probably not most athletic or highly recruited but has a knack for getting open and catching the ball

Same..he looked like a real contributor at the spring game.

If they do it the way staffs usually do it, or theoretically are supposed to do it, they'll grade out the QBs based on scrimmages....

It just don't get it. How has Martell earned the right to be #1 on day 1 of Fall camp? He surely didn't do it in the Spring. I'm not buying Manny's interview where he said Tate's Summer workouts have put him in this position. You can't earn anything in Summer workouts. They're not even official (No coaching). Summer workouts are to prepare you for Fall camp where you are to showcase the improvements you made over the Summer. It's pretty clear to me, he wants Martell to be the starting QB. And the entire depth chart for every position was based on Summer workouts? Right?

I just want there to be a real competition and for it to be fare.

Why are you making this more than what it is? Each of the 3 qbs got reps with the first team .People who worked the hardest in offseason program usually gets first reps during spring or fall practice. As time goes along in camp then the order will be more based on their play. Tate did the best in summer workouts and in qb meetings and other things had to have done well too.

Just look at dj ivey and blades for an example. Yes blades has been doing well but ivey played a bit better in the spring which left most people inclined to think he had the spot locked up yet he was 2nd team behind al blades. Blades happened to be doing extremely well in the summer workouts and got the nod early on in camp. Will it end that way? Who knows, but probably not.

I'm making a big deal out it? You have CIS and all the media showing Martell as the #1 QB. So excuse me if I question how he got to #1 over the unofficial Summer. So, you're telling me he got there based on weight room work because everything else is player organized and I can't see how coaches could evaluate player run activities to move a guy to 1st team.

I will roll with whomever wins the job. I just want it to be won on the field and for it to be clear an decisive.

▪ One UM off-field football official said even though N’Kosi Perry was named quarterback MVP of spring ball, that shouldn’t be overstated and the job is genuinely wide open, with the first few weeks of fall camp to determine the starter.

Just because perry was named mvp doesn’t mean he leads for the qb job. It’s a legit competition and just because martell started off fall camp as 1st team doesn’t mean he’s the guy either. It simply means he outperformed the other QBs during the offseason program, nothing more and nothing less

Relax, let it play out. Martell probably showed the most leadership qualities and put in the work. It's the first day.

this is an overreaction based on one practice, man. the QBs will all get their time. it's wide open.

Why's Martell at 1st team? He didn't get there in the Spring? His overall Spring performance was not the best. N'kosi won the QB MVP in the Spring, but Summer was weighted more going into Fall camp? I'm not hating on Martell. He doesn't make the decisions for the team. I just don't want this to be a Justin Fields situation where the QB job was handed to him and lip service to everyone else.

That's my point. Leadership from what? Summer workouts are player run. There is no coaching and how do you evaluate player run workouts when all 3 QBs were doing Summer workouts? In the weight room you have Feeley to provide feedback to the coaches which I'm sure he has. In Manny's interview, he talked about Martell and how he "earned it" over the Summer and I'm like earned what?

Where is the alternative for Herbert then? Because Campbell looked far worse in the spring game and got whipped by the speed rush too. Hopefully herbert takes that next step. If he doesn’t , assuming Nelson starts at left tackle we can possibly move scaife to right tackle and put Cleveland reed as the starting right guard
In that scenario Scaife would be much better at RT imho.

I'm just warning yall it's something to keep an eye on, take it however you want, just hope he's improved by 8/24.

Couldn't agree more. Everyone has been asking where is 4* Herbert? Herbert simply does not have the athleticism to play a starting position. He maxed out in High School. I watched him at the Spring Game, let me put it this way ... if we have to depend on Herbert, may heaven help us all.

You do know that they still have David Feeley around them in the summer right? You dont think he reports back to Manny every day? Are you new to this football thing?

Martell IS Manny's guy....he brought him in when the other 2 constantly chirped about leaving the team. They wanted to quit instead of compete just cause Tate showed up. That is a lack of leadership. But like I said, summer workouts are Feeley run.

I think the issue we will run into is that the so fla people will obviously side with Perry. But Martell is everything a coach looks for. He has the persona, the moxie, leadership etc. however it seems like Perry has the better arm talent. Perry seems like a dip **** off the field. And honestly that hard to win with. You need a student of the game.
