That the moment it becomes clear an employee must be fired - it must be immediate.
To retain that employee does further damage to your endeavor - your business - and it makes a statement to other employees and prospective employees that a certain level of performance is demanded, and if not, termination will be immediate.
This tightens up everyone in the organization. (Whisper - "Did you know XXXXX got fired today? He was terminated and escorted out of the building!)
Firing is always unpleasant, but there is zero benefit, and certain detriment in delaying what must be done.
Another term is DAMAGE CONTROL.
