We could sure use another QB and I saw his name quite a bit lately but haven't seen if he signed anywhere.

Evan Shirreffs, 3-star quarterback from Georgia, will visit ODU this weekend

Old Dominion is after yet another record-setting quarterback from Georgia.

Evan Shirreffs, ranked the No. 3 quarterback in Georgia by Rivals and a 3-star recruit by 247Sports, said he will visit ODU this weekend. He was set to sign with Penn on Wednesday, the national signing day, but decided to wait after being contacted by ODU quarterbacks coach Ron Whitcomb.

ODU lost 3-star quarterback recruit Caleb Wilson from California to the University of Southern California late Monday night, and the Monarchs are in need of a high school quarterback.

Taylor Heinicke, who grew up in suburban Atlanta, threw for 14,959 yards in his four seasons at ODU.

Much like Heinicke, the 6-foot-6, 210-pound Shirreffs didn’t get much of a chance to display his throwing arm until he was a senior. He was overlooked by most Football Bowl Subdivision schools, which usually lock into quarterbacks before they are seniors.

He played behind his brother, Bryant, who is now at Connecticut, until his junior year at Jefferson High School in Jefferson, Ga. He broke his thumb during the fourth game of his junior year and missed most of the rest of the season.

As a senior this past season he completed 163 of 236 passes for 2,784 yards and 23 touchdowns. He was a first-team all-state pick and named the most valuable player of the Georgia/Florida All-Star game.

A stellar student with a 4.0 grade-point-average, he has offers from Columbia, VMI and Penn. Miami and Georgia have asked him to walk-on without a scholarship. He lives in Athens, Ga., a few miles from the Georgia campus.

He said ODU has recruited him, but turned up the heat after Wilson committed to USC. His parents, John and Lisa Shirreffs, are coming to Norfolk with him on his visit. John Shirreffs played football at Virginia in the 1980s.

“It’s definitely a good school and the location is very convenient being right by Virginia Beach,” Shirrieffs said. “I’ve talked about the coaches a lot about academics and I know about Taylor Heinicke.”

He was impressed with ODU’s 6-6 record last season, the Monarchs’ first in FBS and Conference USA.

“There’s definitely good things happening over there," he said. “To have such a good record in their first year of Division I-A was pretty impressive.”

Shirreffs said for that now he is uncommitted. “I’m pretty much keeping my options open at this point,” he said. “You never know what’s going to happen this week. The signing week is always so crazy.”

ODU has three quarterbacks on its roster: Shuler Bentley, the two-time South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year who redshirted this past season; Joey Verhaegh, a Boise, Idaho native who played at Fullerton College in California and will have sophomore eligibility this season; and Blake LaRussa, who enrolled at ODU in January as a walk-on after graduating early from Bishop Sullivan Catholic High in Virginia Beach.

I really like his accuracy and ball placement, he is definitely growing on me as a quality QB backup prospect and even a game manager which is really what Miami has used in the past to get the ball to the play makers.

WE GON LOSE HIM TO ODU

Once things settle down tomorrow, I think he gets an offer miami, **** we have the room.

Go Canes

Its not about the scholoship for this year but could be useful for the 3/5 years after that depending if he redshirted. I think staff prefers to grab a senior transfer again ala Heaps as insurance till the qb calvalry arives next 2 years. Allison/Teddy

Gotta say, I hate judging QBs based on highlight videos, but I think he's a take at this point. Gotta bring in 1 QB a year, and he looks to be a nice blend of size, athleticism, and arm strength.

Seems like there is plenty of space available.. If he chosses a scholi over a walk-on position well I could not blame him. Free education in the end is what the 95% of college football players walk away with when not drafted.

And the most important thing in a QB is what goes on upstairs, and if this kid is looking at Ivey league schools it's safe to believe he's intelligent too.

So kid is smart, has size, has arm strength, and accuracy. Why is he not a take since we have room and our backup currently is a baseball player.

To be Honest... Wouldn't we rather have a 5th year Sr Transfer (ala jack heaps) as an insurance for Kaaya.

I bet they are waiting to see exactly who will be out there when the dust settles.

**** maybe even a JUCO...

To Take a QB with the premise that he might be number 3 or 2, you better be prepared for him to play.
I rather take an experience/ older guy

But If he wants to Walk on ... by All means .. please do so.

At this point I would offer. Its the equivalent of some pro team taking a flyer on a qb in the 7th round. Pray you hit the jackpot.

If we asked him to walk on why would we offer him a scholarship? I'm not saying a lot of what goes on with Golden makes sense, but this does. No way I offer the kid a ship when I wanted him to walk on. If he wasn't good enough for an offer then, he isn't now.
