Mario Cristobal, Miami: D+

2022 record: 3-3 | Miami's 2021 record: 7-5
Previous job: Oregon head coach
Grade when hired: A

Miami made an unprecedented investment in Cristobal, and a discouraging first six games doesn't reduce excitement much or change the long-term outlook about returning to championship contention. The product on the field hasn't looked much different so far in the Cristobal era. After opening with 70 points against Bethune-Cookman, the Canes have averaged just 23.4 points against five FBS opponents, losing to three of them. Two of their losses came by a single score -- Texas A&M (road) and North Carolina (home) -- but a 45-31 defeat to Middle Tennessee, which is 0-3 in Conference USA play, shouldn't happen at The U. Cristobal has work ahead, both in recruiting and player development, with positions such as offensive line and wide receiver. Other than the Middle Tennessee debacle, the defense has been solid with several playmakers emerging (Corey Flagg Jr., Akheem Mesidor, Kamren Kinchens). The second-half schedule is fairly navigable until Clemson on Nov. 19.

It didn’t mention how many dropped passes missed tackles fumbles interceptions and missed field goals Mario had.

"...Two of their losses came by a single score -- Texas A&M (road) and North Carolina (home)..."
Scott Frost, who is Scario Frostoballess' cousin, had 22 one score losses before the Cornhuskers shucked him out the door.

Midseason grades for 1st year HCs? Shouldn't it be "Incomplete" for all of them. More knee-jerk reactions for clicks by "the flagship"...
I guess you can think like a progress report. This is where he stands right now.

There are still tests and the grade can definitely go up.

But the F- from MTSU is weighing heavily right now with no big A's really to balance it out. A won over A&M or a big win over UNC would have helped counter the major failure against MTSU.

While I’m still holding out hope that Mario will turn out to be “the guy”, I have to say that giving him a D+ is being very, very generous. D+ is a passing grade and he clearly deserves a failing grade (E) so far this season. While I think we all agree that Manny was not capable of turning things around, I’m pretty sure if he were the coach this year, we would have a 3-3 record at the worst, and likely a 4-2. record. Gotta call it like it is.

Even a car touted to go zero to 60 in 1.2 seconds will hit the 30 mph mark…hopefully that’s where Mario is.

I guess... I just don't see the purpose of it.

The point of a progress report is for schools and teachers to provide children and parents an assessment of where the child stands academically so that everyone knows where they are with time to correct/intervene before grades are entered.

The point of this article is to generate ad revenue.

That's a flawed analogy, too. It assumes the final benchmark for Mario or any other 1st year HC is the end of season 1.
If a reasonable benchmark for Mario is to be in the CFB playoffs by the end of year 3, then he's still building the car.
