Eric Weddle torches Bryce Underwood, praises Darian Mensah

I’m sure everyone has heard Weddles comments on Underwood. I was curious what quarterbacks he was impressed by and came across this:



Around the 12:30 mark he started talking about who impressed him on his tour and the first one he mentioned was Mensah.

I do find it a little odd that he’s so public about his thoughts with his son looking at these schools. But if anyone would know itd be him. It looks like he visited April 13th for a um practice.
 
I didnt find a problem with his comments and think they were blown out of proportion BUT even he said it, they were clipped and engineered to do so, so I guess the content ceator set him up and got what they wanted..

Anyway, his comments hold weight because he knows what its supposed to look like but I have been surprised by offseason dialogue of Mensah and really only media who gave him respect was David Hale of espn but he is ACC guy.. I think many will be surprised by what we do on offense this coming season..

This season is gonna be fun..

Yeah i think a lot of factors go into it. For one, the backup and Bryce are the same age despite the class difference. Bryce being the #1 player int the country with such a publicized recruitment.

And then moreover, you have the backup’s brother balling out at Notre Dame while they are both 3rd generation Michigan Wolverines so people wanna see if he can do what his brother can. Lastly, Bryce was the worst of the four true freshman p4 starters (Bear, JSK, and Malik Washington).

Weddle obviously is on point in assessment but he leaves out one major factor when talking about Bryce. He even mentions that Whittingham wants to run the ball. IMO Underwood’s utility as a runner cannot be overlooked in any conversation about benching him for Carr.

Underwood can get you 50+ rushing yards every game and use his legs to convert plenty of third downs. He is a potential 1k rushing yards on the season quarterback.

Right… and to King’s about QBs under Whittingham he doesn’t have to have a skilled passer to have a good passing game. He schemes up well on offense to hide deficiency. There isn’t a HC who’s done more with less as consistently as Whittingham in the last 10 years.

But Underwood is mehh… and he could still put up decent numbers because of what he’s surrounded with

And don’t downplay Bryce’s price tag impacting fans expectations. It doesn’t make sense but you know how people are.

I’d be shocked if Bryce isn’t the starter

Yeah great point, it’s usually universally mentioned whenever discussing him.

Bryce most def will start. More so thinking when Michigan loses their first game or whenever he plays poorly…will still be be tough to bench him if his running abilities are unleashed

If they lose early the drumbeat will be very loud for Bryce to be replaced by Carr.

Whitingham is the perfect coach to bring the most out of underwood. To me he was very underwhelming but that's sitting what I expected. To me whitingham was an amazing hire & tells me day is on a clock now. Underwood is exactly the type of QB that kills it in his system. **** of a mesh.

yeah whittingham is one of the best coaches in CFB; his teams are always tuff and disciplined. Jason Beck and Jordan Palmer are working with Underwood too so his lower half is expected to get better compared to his mechanics last year.

Just having a dominant running game alone will make things a lot easier for him.

Our game against Utah next year in Vegas would have been a helluva more challenging if Whittingham didn’t leave to Michigan, that much i know.

Honestly, I think it was more sellers agent pushing the miami name out there to help boost those NIL dollars… I agree sellers did not fit the mold of what we valued in a QB with accuracy

How good is the younger Carr? Can honestly say I don’t know anything about him other than who is older brother is. Don’t believe I’ve ever seen a video of him throwing or any game tape from high school.

Not sure but I do know if he was at Notre Dame as backup he’d be 3rd in preseason Heisman odds

His HS stats were slightly better than his brother’s who preceded him at the same high school. Only has two years of HS starting experience compared to CJ’s three, however.

He was committed to Miami Ohio and flipped late in the cycle after their other ‘26 quarterback Brady Simegel tore his ACL during his senior season. Bryce is only older than him by two weeks. Brady is older than them both by 11 months.

Tommy Carr went 21 for 30 on 144 passing yards with 10 carries for 60 rushing yards at the spring game.
