Ed Reed and new defensive staff.

I honestly hope this is true. It's apparent to anyone with eyes that there is enough sample size on Manny's defenses (going back to his coordinator days) that points to the fact this defensive system gets absolutely shredded against teams with a heartbeat.

Not just the staff, but the entire defensive system needs to be scrapped. Only at the University of Miami is such a responsible party also embedded as the head coach. Incompetence has been running deep in Coral Gables for two decades, so having Reed on staff can only help. He was easily one of the smartest players to ever put on a set of pads.

It's also becoming more and more apparent why the Highsmith hire didn't happen either. I'd be willing to bet he made some recommendations during his interview that ruffled Manny's feathers.

If Manny doesn't hire a self standing qualified DC to bring in their own scheme his time here as HC will be short.

The blame goes on Manny. When you hire glorified GA’s to be on field coaches, it’s not their fault they have no idea what they’re doing. Couple that with the feeling of pride and accomplishment Manny gave them when he kept all of them on. Since that day it was always gonna be Manny and his boys against everybody else. They were sheltered and stood up for, until they got exposed too many times to defend anymore.
It seems that things will be finally corrected despite of Manny, not because of him lol His Learning on the job was taking too long.

As some here may know Ed, is a good friend of mine. When he is home in Atlanta we often hang out smoke cigars and talk Canes. Back in November we were having a conversation about the team (most I will keep to myself), here is the one thing I will share from Ed’s exact words

“Manny’s boys are the problem, I have 3 championship defensive playbooks in my office and not one member of the defensive staff has every asked me a question about defense, but the offensive coaches are in my office everyday”

He was deeply concerned about how bad the defensive coaching was and told me how he would regularly meet with the AD about fixing the coaching on that side of the ball. Today’s hire is a step in the right direction. Hopefully T-Rob takes full advantage of being on the same staff as the best safety of all time.
Glad they’re all walking the plank and ER20 is still here standing.

Piecing together some things, sounds like Banda had issues with Rumph and also Baker???
and reed. basically, anyone who might have credibility to speak to his guys.

not sure it matters anymore but i suspect a good bit of the rumored dysfunction was true.

and manny was responsible for stopping it. we’ll see if it’s fixed. maybe reed was the messenger.

Thought I’d share this. I hung out with a couple players through some mutual friends a few weeks ago. One thing they told me about Ed Reed and the D staff relationship. Ed would talk to the secondary players after a team meeting and the coaches (Banda in particular) would absolutely hate it since Ed would say something completely different. We all know who the players would rather listen to.
I've known this....

Thats why I still believe his hiring was not a PR move.

All season long if you watched him and noticed he was watching the defense closely and jotting down notes on the sideline. He used this season IMO to observe and then make his recommendations.

Side note: @Hstokes1447 any cigars you recommend

One of the things that was alarming to me about Bakers defense is that too many times I'd see a 2nd or 3rd and long(like more than 15 yards) and I'd be thinking, "OK, guys watch for the draw and screen -- or some sort of QB run" And they'd get gashed for big plays on exactly that as our guys shot upfield

Again, forget the system or play-calls, but you have to have some sorta football IQ and awareness. To me, it was clear that our players were very lacking in that area, or the staff simply wasn't making them aware of situational football.
Just like when Manny was Dc. We would give up so many 3rd and longs!

I've known this....
sounds like banda was a real issue and when manny stepped to the hc role it got worse because manny wasn’t there as closely to manage it.

not sure this surprises me given his background, personality and closeness to manny, and the types of people he had to navigate. but it’s sad nonetheless because it highlights just how amateurish the past bunch of years have been on D. we had a personable ex bartender with an insecurity complex and a close relationship with manny pursuing an agenda that wasn’t in the best interests of the kids or team. and bad mouthing a guy in rumph who for all his recruiting shortcomings was and is a true cane, and knows more about playing db than banda prolly ever will.

i sure hope manny understands that part of the job of a leader is to stamp this isht out and make sure it doesn’t recur. when people talk about culture, this is squarely part of the discussion. if manny’s own ‘boys’ aren’t on the same page with team goals, how can they expect anyone else to be?

Have to wonder if the situation got worse after Manny came back and hired Baker to call plays. Remember, just 2-3 weeks earlier Richt hired Banda to call plays. There was almost certainly immediate tension.

After 24 months, it bottomed out and now that entire staff is being remade for the better.

yep, it looks like it definitely deteriorated. i was focused on manny going from dc to hc and just being less able to manage banda but baker between them was probably also an issue.

in retrospect, sounds like banda was a real issue. he was a loyal sycophant to manny as a young coach for obvious reason, but it sure looks from the outside like he was insecure, power centric and defensive and wasn’t a cultural positive as a result.

when a coaching staff has agendas within itself, it’s not a good sign for the team and culture being on the same page.

pretty disappointed manny let this all go on: should have been dealt with a year ago, minimum.

And if this DID happen, it most certainly spilled over to the team.... There's no way they didn't see friction like that..
