Denzel sums it up
Denzel Perryman asked about D criticism: "Outsiders, fans, they see it from a fan standpoint. They don't see it from a football standpoint."
States it was just a matter of execution.. Simple as that
Simply not true. Game plan was completely different. We rarely played 2 safeties deep unless it was an obvious passing down. Actually we went to it a bit in the second quarter and that's we they started moving the ball. We stacked the line a lot more, had our backers 2-3 yards closer to the line and played single safety the majority of the game. I hate D'Ono, but I'll admit he adjusted this week....I hope it's a sign of a fundamental change going forward. I did see some of the conservative bull**** creep back in the second half, but we were up so maybe it was justified a bit.
We rarely played 2 safeties deep against Nebraska if you're talking about at the snap. The difference is that Nebraska controlled the LOS and Duke couldn't do that. Nebraska rarely got behind schedule while Duke frequently found themselves in 3rd and 5+. When Duke found those downs, we brought a lot of 5 man pressure which isn't exactly uber-aggressive. They couldn't hurt us when we did that because of bad quarterback play.
I think people wondering why we've never been this "aggressive" are going to be frustrated when we play a good offense (especially on the road) because I think what Perryman said is right on and not some confabulation--we executed better and Duke failed to defeat the things that we were doing. But, we didn't change into some upfield attacking defense overnight. We just held the LOS, tackled better, and finally got some 3rd and longs on which to bring a bit of pressure that they couldn't pass through.
