Duke Post Game Plus/Minus

Golden has brass ones starting the true frosh might be one of the biggest calls in this programs history....

remember when everyone wondered if Heaps should really been in there after 2 games of Kaaya or already had RW coming back in?

Yep it took brass balls for golden to start a true frosh knowing the fans wouldnt understand that mistakes were going to be made and he would take all the heat... Looks like it might be one of the best decisions a coach of the canes ever made

What a ridiculous statement. Going with the obviously better player isn't a sign of great coaching or bravery. And the majority of the fan base wanted Kaaya.

3 GOOD

Glad to see Duke have his best game of the year

Defense actually play aggressive and with some swag. We we running more of a 4-3 ?... Looked like we were getting upfield a bit more then usual.

Most important... Getting the W in coastal.

3 BAD

-GUS

-PLAYCALLING

-WE are celebrating a win like it was against FSU.. Personally for me I was glad we won, but we should of throttled them. 22-10 is not enough.
Maybe I saw incorrectly (missed 2nd half) but I don't remember the dline getting much push at all. They weren't getting driven back, which is an improvement, but they weren't causing havoc either.

Even: Dline.

OK, we won so that's good. And I know they beat us last year and were ranked but I just have a really hard time getting really excited about a win over Duke. Must be my gag reflexes kicking in because this is not a statement win or anything. Just a stepping stone on our way to the Coastal title. Which is also nothing but a stepping stone to the ACC title. Just keep winning guys. And I will continue to wait for the day when the offense and defense are both clicking on all cylinders. What a day that will be. Nov. 15 maybe?

Denzel sums it up
Denzel Perryman asked about D criticism: "Outsiders, fans, they see it from a fan standpoint. They don't see it from a football standpoint."

States it was just a matter of execution.. Simple as that

Simply not true. Game plan was completely different. We rarely played 2 safeties deep unless it was an obvious passing down. Actually we went to it a bit in the second quarter and that's we they started moving the ball. We stacked the line a lot more, had our backers 2-3 yards closer to the line and played single safety the majority of the game. I hate D'Ono, but I'll admit he adjusted this week....I hope it's a sign of a fundamental change going forward. I did see some of the conservative bull**** creep back in the second half, but we were up so maybe it was justified a bit.

We rarely played 2 safeties deep against Nebraska if you're talking about at the snap. The difference is that Nebraska controlled the LOS and Duke couldn't do that. Nebraska rarely got behind schedule while Duke frequently found themselves in 3rd and 5+. When Duke found those downs, we brought a lot of 5 man pressure which isn't exactly uber-aggressive. They couldn't hurt us when we did that because of bad quarterback play.

I think people wondering why we've never been this "aggressive" are going to be frustrated when we play a good offense (especially on the road) because I think what Perryman said is right on and not some confabulation--we executed better and Duke failed to defeat the things that we were doing. But, we didn't change into some upfield attacking defense overnight. We just held the LOS, tackled better, and finally got some 3rd and longs on which to bring a bit of pressure that they couldn't pass through.

The staff needs to get Stacy Coley situated. Guy is going through the struggles and the playcalling for him is not helping him either.

Arguably our best threat on offense with Duke. Coley a special talent and is going to waste. Chalk it up to whatever it is. But we have to get him in a groove. I see Waters, Dorsett, Lewis, Berrios and Walford all in synch with Kaaya. But we have Stacy on another planet.

Idk when it's gonna happen, but we gotta get Stacy Coley right. We got another 7 games to go so their is plenty of time. But clock is ticking, just get Stacy right please. Kinda sad what's going on there. Very special talent.

22-10 wasnt enough the vegas line was 6-7... So we actually exceeded expectations .... This isnt 2001

If you actually watched the game you'd realise that the gulf in talent between the two teams was significant.

They literally couldn't stop Duke and Yearby on the ground.

We should have buried them, based on how that game played out.

The good- A win is a win. The teams energy. Duke/Yearby. Defense looked more aggressive.
The bad- OL injuries, James Coley taking a short vacation to Cuba in his head for the end of the first and most of the second quarter. MOAR bubble screens. Kicking game needs to get better.

This was a good win because we basically dominated them. Give the kids credit. The defense answered the call. Dont try to take away a solid win from these kids. Now does it mean that golden is off the hot seat? No. He lives to fight another day. Hes got another test against paul johnson next Saturday night.

We wont beat Vtech or Fsu without stacy coley getttin on track. Hes that big of a threat in this offense.

glad to see Herb getting the groove back.

Nobody predicted that we would hold this offense to 10 points. Give it up to Dno. For the second time in his career this defense looked like an ol skool miami D. (UF)

I'd love to see a chart of our defense over the last two games....we seemed to play a ton more single safety on early downs, but I haven't rewatched the Nebraska game. Also, I think this is the first time in the last three years we held any power conference team to under 300 yards, so it can't just be "they sucked". I'm sure we won't hold any other team to this anemic output, and I know we didn't fundamentally change our scheme, but we seemed to change philosophically and that's a positive.

Get excited over the D giving up half the yards they did last year. 5 games, only one over 400 yards of offense allowed. Even with two scrubs on the schedule, not too bad.

Plus-I know most think Golden has lost the team but he got them to play with passion. I don't normal like all that fake excitement but it really seemed like the players were enjoying themselves and that was good to see.

Minus- stop dancing during breaks. Maybe I am scarred from the unc game where we all danced and then the next play the went50+ on a reverse..

Clock management. Give you playmakers a shot. I get feeling like you are controlling the game and you don't want to mess up but you have almost 2 minutes and timeouts. Let coley try a punt or hand to duke and see if he breaks one

Kicking the ball out of the endzone after the penalty. Makes no sense. You are kicking off from the 50, why give them a free 25 yards. Either pop up the kick and try to pin hem or go onside. You have to understand the situation.

Why run the ball with Gus at the end of the game. Less than 2 minutes to go in the game. Duke has 1 timeout. Just take 3 knees. Then punt. They would have approximately 45 seconds to have to score 2 times. The only bad thing that could happen was a fumble. By running Edwards into the line you were basically conceding the play anyways.

This.

We must figure out the Stacy Coley saga going on. Still got a long ways to go and I'm sure he'll kill it. But it's very worrisome.

Watching Coley continue to call those bubble screens dispute repeated failures smacks of the pride Al has in his stupid passive defense. No matter how many failures, it just can't be a coaching error, it must be the players. If you want to throw screens, throw them toe Duke or Yearby. We have down the filed WRs and, finally, a real QB. Oh, need to find something for Gus to do, other than end scoring drives and ******** up in crucial situations. I am still not happy with out TE--can the kid catch?

Plus
1. Defense looked good. Made tackles and played agressive rather than passive. Looked confident.
2. Duke and Yearby was unstoppable.
3. Waters looked like the Waters most people expected him to look like coming into the season.
4. Kaaya getting better and better, no ints.
Minus
1. Play calling. Should've rushed more because the Blue Devils had no answer for Duke and Yearby.
2. Stacy Coley-sophmore slump extends for one more week. Seems to be mental, dropped and automatic td bomb.
3. Gus- Said it multiple times, dude should be a fullback. Fumbled and didn't get much when he carried. When Scarlett, Walton and Williams get here next season Gus will be moved to fullback and Gray to receiver. Bet.

CIRCKE JERK ALERT

I was asking home come we never us Coley on normal routes but as we've seen before he has suspect hands. Hope he gets that fixed because he is so talented with the ball but we might not get to see it on anything other than a kick return.
