DTs and Jackson update - Tuesday 11PM

Tennessee got Schiano fired using social media.

Everyone with a myspace needs to shame Norton and RJ into staying in school.

Draft advisory board only gives three possible grades. 1st round, 2nd round or 3rd-undrafted. Both RJ and Norton got 3rd-undrafted grades.

Interesting. I didn't know that. Quite the gap from 3rd to undrafted. Sounds like they are trying to discourage the fringe types by throwing that word undrafted out there.

Certainly appropriate. I don't know how any scout could project McIntosh or Norton above the third round. It's a lopsided draft that is comparatively weak at some positions like defensive back and tight end, but stronger than typical at spots like defensive tackle and running back. Once those strong positions are identified you get a rush of players at those positions early, and then typically a long lull before the third tier guys are snapped up.

IMO, Jackson would be making a mistake not to turn pro. Results don't really matter, not as much as posters prefer to believe. It's just like regular season results not as significant as preseason ratings or certain vital statistical categories. Since cornerback is a weak spot this year, but a passing league is desperate for those guys, somebody with ideal length and ability to find the football plus enforce on running plays is going to receive great benefit of a doubt. All Jackson would have to do is perform reasonably well in the combine and throughout the interview process. If he does those things and also measures at 32 inch arms or longer, then the benefit of a doubt soars.

If he stays in school then he's shoved into a 2019 cornerback crop that already looks much stronger than 2018.

Not to call out the pink elephant in the thread...

But we gonna blame Pfenninger for this, right? Surely he's the one telling them they will be R1 players so he can get them riches.

What round would make leaving early "worth it"?

3rd or better?

Like what's the benefit of leaving early to be a 5th-6th round pick? (if you can improve your stock by staying)

Its dependent on your position too.

For instance if you are a RB, you really should be leaving after your junior year in most situations, even if that means you being drafted in the 5th or 6th round. For a guys like Joe Yearby, that was a bad decision because he had no chance at getting drafted.

QBs, should only leave early if they are guaranteed to be a 1st rounder. Guys like Rosen, Darnold, Josh Allen etc are all making good decisions by declaring early. Rosen and Darnold are basically guarnateed to be top 10 picks. And Josh Allen, though I think hes trash, certainly has the physical abilities teams always fall in love with.

OL and DL are the positions where it almost always is in the players best interest to return for their senior season. For a guy like RJ McIntosh where he very likely will end up a 3rd or 4th rounder, he's right there on the fringe on whether he should declare early or not. If I were him Id want to stay to try to win a national championship and to get my degree. But he isn't making a bad decision by entering early if he will be taken in the first 4 rounds, especially since Willis will eat into his PT. Kendrick Norton on the other hand is making a bad decision. NTs are always sought after in the NFL, but the problem is he really hasn't had this amazing year that will make him a top 4 round player. He'll probably be drafted, but itll be late. And he could be throwing a lot of money away, becuase next year with another year of Kul teaching him and getting stronger he could easily work into the 3rd round.

When it makes all the sense in the world to come back BOTH for the team and themselves, and yet they cant conceive that, its infuriating. I know a lot will say you don't know their situation.
No, you are ignoring one thing. Injury. A serious one, blown knee..and their football careers might be over. Zero chance of football $$, barring a miracle in FA down the road.
Even a 3rd round pick (not guaranteed, but possible for either) is somewhere around $3 mill, though only $750k guaranteed. That's even with injury in camp I believe.
You all are viewing this myopically as fans. I'd love for them to return, but I wouldn't listen to a single fool on a message board about what decision to make with my life...and I'm not in their shoes. Yes, they could make a lot more by returning, balling out and getting drafted higher. Or they could bust a knee and get Ditka. I'm not going to hold it against either for leaving just because I want them to stay.

Agreed.

Mofos forget the league minimum is around 400k. That's good money.

The 4-year minimum base salaries for players in the 2017 draft are as follows: $465,000 (Year 1), $540,000 (Year 2), $615,000 (Year 3), $690,000 (Year 4). If eventually signed to a contract, each rookie drafted will get a 4-year deal, whereas undrafted rookies are only eligible for 3-year contracts.
I see why juniors with a good shot at making a roster go pro.

It sucks if you're undrafted or drafted in the last two rounds, are a marginal player and don't make a roster in Year 1. Also, you have to look at the guaranteed money component. These aren't guaranteed contracts for the entire duration of the contract. If they were, there would be no need to specify the guaranteed component. Lastly, after the agent's share (which is large) and taxes, the net pay is not that high for players drafted in the last couple rounds. Then you factor in money spent on family members and groupies (often part of the equation) and these guys typically rip through the net pay in a flash. Norton has been a solid payer for us but he may go completely undrafted. What then? A $60,000 "contract" to play in the CFL. The NFL is an extremely competitive business. Players have to be completely ready or they will fail.

I think slick & unscrupulous agents seeking a fast buck "now" convince these guys to go early. It is horrible, horrible advice. These players should stay and get themselves completely ready to actually succeed at the super competitive next level. Neither RJ nor Norton are Cortez Kennedy, Vince Wilfork or Russell Maryland (not even close). They are seriously risking their futures with incredibly uninformed & poor decisions (especially Norton).

A bit misleading. FCS and fringe declarations at oddball schools that likely are grade casualties fill most of that 30%. Also, players with mystery injury history end up undrafted.

There aren't many of those and if you want to count that then the other end of the spectrum is that the 70% includes can't miss 1st/2nd round early entrants.

I would imagine the real number is less than 50% of players not expected to go in the 1-3 rounds actually get drafted.
