DT Willis back enrolled in classes at UM

Just to confirm, He has eligibility for 2018, regardless if he plays this year or not....right?

Nobody has pinned that down. The NCAA manual for this year was published it on 1 August 17. I believe this is the applicable paragraphs:

14.02.14.1 Academic Year of Residence. To satisfy an academic year of residence, a student shall:(Revised: 4/14/10, 5/14/13)

(a) Be enrolled in and complete a minimum full-time program of studies for two full semesters or three full quarters; or
(b) Be enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies for two semesters or three quarters and pass a number of hours (including hours earned at the certifying institution during a summer term) that is at least equal to the sum total of the minimum load of each of the required terms.

He may not have had enough hours going into the summer term and when he left, there went his eligibility. Me thinks that the compliance specialists and the AD's academic specialists are poring over this, looking to see if the hours add up to eligibility for this year (with Richt being guarded to keep Marky Mark's NCAA Funky Bunch off the trail).

Willis, Haskins, Jenkins. Love Richt, and am hype about the season, but the big boys turn the other cheek. Those 3 guys would of made a difference this year.

Pete might be a little confused on this Willis issue. Willis was always on the roster UM put out. He's on the roster, enrolled in school and practicing with the team. The only thing stopping Rick from using him this year is Rick drawing a line in the sand and not wanting to change his mind.

He's definitely "allowed" to play, but Richt said today that Willis won't play this season. And he was off the roster for a bit. He was not with the team over the summer and was in LA.

I posted this in the other Willis thread. None of the reporters has asked the eligibility question. The NCAA manual for this year was published it on 1 August 17. I believe these MAY be the applicable paragraphs:

So do you think Willis will play next year or be more likely to bolt to the NFL?

Buddy has like 10 career tackles, you think that's enough evidence for an NFL GM?

So this season our scout team DL will consist of the following:

DE: Jon Garvin
DE: DJ Johnson
DT: Jon Ford
DT: Gerald Willis

I don't care that 3 of these guys are freshman, that is a better look than our OL will get most Saturdays.

This has a Haskins vibe to it, Richt wants to boot him but needs him, so he's gonna give him more time to prove himself.

In the end, we have to hope Richt isn't too itchy with his trigger finger, because Willis could be huge for us if we keep him next year.

His plan right now is to play next season, but who knows when the season ends.

Can we just coin the term "pulling a Yearby" already?

Gerald Willis is 22 right now, if he chooses to come back he'll be 24 should he make it to an NFL roster. Those years count to NFL front offices. If he's not trying to get his degree immediately, then he should work as hard as he can in the classroom, forego college football and try to turn pro. He can always come back to finish his degree, if he wants it.

Unless your draft stock can be dramatically improved (Delaney, D.), coming back to play for free is dumb.

He's undraftable at this point. Literally no one in the league would use a pick on him. This is just silly.

Dammit mane..he gone after this year

Why would he leave? Gets him in good graces with the coaches. Lets him thoroughly test his knee. Legit starter next year.

I dont see how any senior staying and practicing for a whole year and not playing comes back for another year of college.. He is staying in shape for the draft and the NFL..

Respectfully, Vern, WTF would Richt allow that? Makes ZERO sense. He has to believe Willis intends to play for the Canes in 2018.

Your talking from a fans perspective not a players....especially from a guy like Willis..He heas had issues his whole career..Why take another chance in college? To me it doesnt make sense to come back..He has already suspended from two different teams numerous times..I think hes gone if he plays this year or not

If Willis were thinking that, do you believe he could fool Mark Richt into letting him practice with the team? Richt already publicly said he was going to prioritize convincing McIntosh and Norton to stay for 2018. Would he let Willis near those two if he thought the kid would poison the well? ... the only logical conclusion I can make is that Willis persuaded Richt he was serious about coming back.

No one wanted to listen to The Franchise, rokulika and @me on this one.

or me

Who are you?

I'm the one that brought up him returning 2018 in the Ford thread that started the discussion again even though I was heavily ridiculed by many of the uppity mofos like Franchise saying Santa and the Easter bunny were also coming. Rokulika was the only one that had my back. Just because I don't have 12,000+ posts with the majority just being an *** doesn't mean I haven't been a daily active member from pretty much the beginning.

Ah, I remember that Canez1.

We were ahead of the curve on the Willis thing when the rest were sure he was gone for good.

I suppose if Joe Yearby was advising he might turn pro, but other than that, I expect he will be part of this team next season if he behaves himself.
