DT Willis back enrolled in classes at UM

A source told Canesinsight this afternoon that defensive tackle Gerald Willis is back enrolled in classes at the University of Miami.

In July, Mark Richt announced that the redshirt junior would be taking a leave of absence from the football season and would not compete for the 2017 season. Willis was not enrolled in classes at UM over the summer. He will still sit this season out and is not on the roster, but Willis could have the option of rejoining the team in January with one more year of eligibility.

Willis could technically also enter the draft following the season, as he is eligible to do so, but would be seen as a potential starter in 2018 with the possibility of Kendrick Norton and R.J. McIntosh having big seasons and turning pro as well.

I guess no one knows whether he has one year or two years of eligibility-- folks keep on asking but now one has provided an answer. The answer to this question is key to understanding what might be happening.

I'm the one that brought up him returning 2018 in the Ford thread that started the discussion again even though I was heavily ridiculed by many of the uppity mofos like Franchise saying Santa and the Easter bunny were also coming. Rokulika was the only one that had my back. Just because I don't have 12,000+ posts with the majority just being an *** doesn't mean I haven't been a daily active member from pretty much the beginning.

I was left a quadriplegic after a dude tried to kill me over my girl several years ago so I don't travel to many games and typing isn't easy so I don't post much but I am on here every day several times if possible. I was actually being recruited by VT and UVA as a QB along the same time that Chad Johnson started getting recruited by WVU at the same position. That should give you some idea of how long ago that was. We lived like 2 miles apart with me on the VA side of the line so we were rivals. My goal was to play for the U and was shocked the first time I met Dennis Erickson and he knew exactly who I was without anyone telling him my name. Best day of my life.

I wish! That was always my dream for as long as I can remember. I still live in Va about 40 minutes west of Blacksburg. Basically in the sticks.

kid is blowing all his chances, even if he comes back for next year hard to imagine him getting significant playing time over rj or Kendrick if they stay due to his off the field issues.

he has this year and next year. you have 5 years to play 4 once you enroll. once you enroll, your clock starts and doesn't stop, barring an extenuating circumstance. 2018 would be his final year.

I forsee plenty of playing time as long as he stays healthy and in good graces due to the amount we rotate personnel on the D-line. Besides, a healthy and motivated Willis on his final year of eligibility could very well end up a starter. The ability is there as long as his mindset is as well.

This helps recruiting by a landslide. There's not a dying need to add a 3rd DT (Briggs in the bag IMO) in Storm '18. This is yuuuuuuuuge.

What's so hard to understand? He's a RS Jr this year. If he comes back next year he'll be a RS Senior.

Still need to add a 3rd and maybe a 4th. Willis is gone after next year so in 19 you are looking at nesta, ford, bethel, and maybe briggs. Thats just not good enough.

Tyreic Martin as well. Forgotten man but the light comes on at different points for different players.

If you had told me MJackson was gonna be our starter this year this time last year I would have lost money. We were all writing him off as a transfer and penciling in the Storm 18 crew to come in and steal spots at CB and now it looks like some of those kids might have to wait their turn! Like it should be!
