Bo’s players didn’t run Ann Arbor the way Joe’s players ran Happy Valley. I grew up in Ann Arbor and the football players were very well behaved. Frankly to the point of being boring.Reckon that Bo Schembechler had any knowledge of the criminal behavior of Dr. Robert Anderson, a physician who was employed in the University of Michigan athletic department from 1968 until his retirement in 1998?
From Wikipedia:
"During his long career with the University of Michigan, Anderson sexually assaulted and raped patients during medical examinations, subjecting them to unnecessary genital and rectal examinations. Although he occasionally sexually assaulted female patients, 90% of his victims were male (while) 40% of his victims were black ... Anderson was widely known for sexually abusing patients among Michigan staff and athletes, earning nicknames such as "Dr. Drop Your Drawers Anderson"
Now the basketball players under Bill Frieder and Steve Fisher had more “financial” freedom. But the football players were pretty straight.
Team doctor? Seems like a Big Ten mandate that team doctors fondle their patients/players.
And I’m confident Bo knew something was going on with the doctor. I know a few guys who played during that time and the players all knew and did everything possible to avoid seeing him. So to think the players knew but not a hyper-controlling head coach like Bo completely strains belief.
But like Joe Pa and so many men from that generation, I think they sincerely did not want to believe that any man who worked for them would do this. So they lived in intentional ignorance. Which is clearly no defense.
