The Hurricanes’ defense might not be stringing together four consistent quarters each week this season, but it has benefited because of defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio’s position on the sideline instead of in an upstairs box.

“I was upstairs the last couple years,’’ he said. “There’s a translation from upstairs. I have to say it to somebody and somebody has got to relay it.” D’Onofrio said his staying on ground level closer to the players “has helped us a lot.’’

“Right there and then as we’re replaying the series in our mind, there are things we’ve got to fix and I’m able to touch each of the individuals and we’re able to get things corrected as the game goes on. When we reiterate it in the short window we have at halftime, they’ve been locked in and understand, ‘OK, if we just settle in and one guy does this and one guy does that, the execution will get a lot better.’”
