He's fighting an uphill battle every step of the way, just like every coach will after him.
Let's look at the facts.
We haven't been a prominent program since any of our potential recruits have been cognizant.
We don't compete for national championships, let alone conference championships.
We don't have a loyal or big fanbase, in fact the fanbase is dwindling as what's there to be a fan of if you didn't go to school here or weren't from our glory days?
We don't offer a big traditional type of college campus environment. Our players aren't revered the way they are at the big schools. Oh, we've got SOBE, so what? These players are a small fish in a big pond there. Do we want a team full of players who came here so they can live it up in SOBE?
We have nice facilities, but are more on the level of UCF and USF than FSU or UF, nevermind all the other competition we have for recruits.
We aren't financially set. We have some money, but we'll never compete for top tier coaches that are established so we'll always be looking for the next up and comer. That trickles down to assistants, support staff, etc.
The gap is growing, not getting smaller. The one thing we have is talent around us, but how do you sell it to them? You want to go play wherever, your friends and family can now tune in every weekend via television or the net. While it isn't the same, video calls can close the distance.
These locals aren't even loyal to their teammates and schools, changing schools on a whim. Why would they be loyal to us?
I know everyone wants a return, but I'm skeptical it'll ever happen. No way it does on the level it did before. It's cute to say, we only care about national championships, but that ignores the reality of who we've become and are. A chance every 5 to 10 years is as realistic as it gets today in the modern game. Our run, it's ancient history.
So will he get it done? Seems unlikely. What is getting it done here though? It's better than what we did this year. Should be challenging for the Coastal for sure. Say we do that yearly, I'm sure many here will want more. So you get rid of the guy and get whomever. Odds are he won't do much better. The odds aren't in our favor. This isn't the early 80's where we're ahead of the game changing the way it's played. Maybe we'll luck into that guy though. B
