Do our receivers get enough separation?

One thing I hope to see is CJ or someone win a big 1 on 1 downfield

CJ cooked Ole Miss deep a bunch of times early but Beck never pulled the trigger. When he finally did CJ didn’t come up with it (though it could have been PI)
He’s due. I wouldn’t mind seeing another of his one-handed specials in this one.

I mean, we hadn’t dudes running wide open all game and Beck missed them. Glad he came up big but he gotta make some of these gimme throws
True. Most throws we scorched at least one DB although Beck was hesitant to throw down the field so most people missed it

One critique I have and maybe some of the Xs and Os guys can answer.

Why on obvious passing downs do we have Bauman split wide? Not hating but that’s not his game and essentially has us playing with 1 less guy. Why not Jojo or Moore, someone that’s an actual threat to make a play?
We did the same last year with McCormick. I never understood it.

The 2 transfers along with the FR coming in as completed our offense. It will be way more prolific in 2026. It was the last ingredient. We have TEs if they can take the steps. Marion and CJ have been adequate but we need someone who they think about similar to how they think about Toney on the outside.

beck’s weakness seems to be his accuracy on deep balls. probably his most accurate deep ball against ole miss was to Bauman, which i cant believe we actually attempted in that moment
I think its from his surgery. His arm strength was affected, even his throwing motion changed. People been open on deep balls.

Question for the X's and O's people.

In re-watching the Ole-Miss game, it seems like the Ole-Miss receivers were a lot more open than ours were. Other than the screens, dump-offs, and wide open Marion 50-yard bomb, it seemed like every completion Beck made was a contested catch in tight coverage. He did flat out miss some open looks like that early pass to Toney and another deep shot to Marion.

RE: Our offense -- Were the Ole Miss corners that good? Or are our route concepts/plays that easy to snuff out?

RE: Our defense -- Were the Ole Miss receivers that good? Or were we just so banged up in the secondary that they took advantage?

It just seemed to be a pattern in which Beck had fewer "easier" downfield throws than Chambliss did.

The scariest part of Indiana is their passing game with those big receivers who make every contested catch and a QB who seemingly doesn't miss. Although, to be fair, he had all day to throw against Oregon.

No

The big play is there and he has missed or not let it rip when its there, But somehow beck bounces back and will pick up the not so pretty play...

Beck will be house money. Got a NFL first round pick he going against and beck can prove his worth even more with great play.

Beck has been questioned all yr. And will be questioned monday.

Time for beck to out play Mendoza and show he is not to be sleeped on and be first round QB..

It’s in part for personnel packages. Defenses roll personnel based on the packages offenses are in. If an offense has 2 tight ends and 1 running back in the huddle (12 personnel) defenses are more inclined to have their hybrid player be an extra linebacker which can create matchups / holes in the passing game.

We roll with Bauman on third down, their in a pass defense package. We pick up the first down, now we have the advantage in the run game too because we don’t need to substitute and can go tempo if we want. They have to slide that pass defender into the box to honor the run on first down. This is what the really good offensive coordinators do. Exploit personnel and matchups.

I think the bigger issue is our route concepts.

While Marion and Moore are our best “line it up and beat somebody on a go pattern guys”… It seems our routes are designed to “set you up” for something later.

The deep ball Jeremiah Smith beat us with… I believe Joshua Moore could provide us a similar down the field option but we’re not intentional about that.

CJ was cooking the best corner in the country in week 1. Not so much since.
Question is who has better secondary guys? ND? UF? Even FSU decent back there. OSU has elite secondary guys. Are we saying Indiana is better than all them?

Great point by OP.Main issue is Dawson .
Schemes are predictable, route trees very simple
As a result very few open receivers.
Also applies to run game, very simplistic
Running outside on counters or just stretch plays has been very effective but rarely used.

Oh and because we run the ball with bunch sets to maximize blocking we also pass out of the same sets a lot which I think can affect spacing to a degree
