Year 3 is the one that concerns me. All that talent he brought in should've been up to playing speed by then. Year 1=The program sucked when he took over. Year 2=He doubled up the previous year's wins. About what he should've done. Year 3=He needed to win more than he did and even worse is John Shoop should've been fired by then. Year 4=The stars got suspended and he probably still should've won more.
He's still my choice for the job.
If not for all the suspensions I think they win the National title
As I look at their season on Wikipedia now, I think they win three of the five games that they lost that year. A 6 point loss to LSU, a 6 point loss to Georgia Tech, and a 4 point loss to NC State seem like the result would've been different had North Carolina's stars not been suspended.
A 23 point loss to a bad Miami team and a 16 point loss to Virginia Tech seem like more talent wouldn't have been the difference between winning and losing. At bare minimum they would be been a very good team and better than 8-5.
He hired Black Santa, a notorious cheater, who, like he did everywhere else he was employed, cheated at UNC and got all those players in trouble taking gifts from agents. It's not like Butch was some innocent victim in that agent scandal. He hired a well-known scoundrel who, not surprisingly, wound up doing scummy **** that decimated his team.
Live by the sword. Die by the sword.
