Dissecting Butch Davis' Tenure at UNC

Butch is an elite evaluator and recruiter . But a straight up corch in game.

You better hope he catches lightning in a bottle twice if he's hired. Elite assistants and talent is a must.

That's what he did at Miami as well basically. I think he's solid. Think Les Miles, Mark Richt, Bob Stoops, etc. Guys like that.

He was 1-5 versus fsu our main rival.

I think Butch is just average. He will recruit will, but we will struggle some game days.. Period..

I want to see us blow some teams out. He is not the coach we want if we plan on being a explosive team. That is not in his DNA, sorry butch advocates truth hits you smack in the face.

Butch is better than the last 3 coaches we've had, but that's not saying much. I agree with you.

He HAS to put a great staff in place. He's not the greatest coach as has been well documented by now. Personally, I'd take Herman any day.
 
Butch will keep certainly keep Swasey (he hired him), Beard (he recruited him), Kehoe (he was part of his staff), and Hurlie (former Cane). He probably brings back Mario, who is a corch, and Dorsey as a rookie OC. That's a really weak staff. Bring me Herman.

That defense was led by 2 very good coaches. Pagano, well we know.

Everett is doing well at JMU.

How many coaches beat FSU, let alone any decent team, down 31 scholarships? I'll wait

He had Moffit, Swasey was an assistant BS role, Clappy promoted him. KB he might keep but I doubt it, He didn't take Kehoe to UNC he won't keep him and he won't keep an office guy with 2 years experience in any coaching capacity in Hurlie.
 
Unc had a ton of talent , especially his third year . 8-5 doesn't add up

Butch is lighting in a bottle, he doesn't need to catch it. Is he best coach? Probably not. BUT for all those who think a hot up and comer is the way to go and that it has worked for us before, it actually has not. JJ and Dennis inherited NC teams loaded with fantastic talent. Dennis was horrible recruiter who left us a wreck. Butch inherited that wreck and left us with a NC team and greatest collection of talent ever. Unless one of these young heroes is a clone of Howard, I suggest everyone roll up their AD/GM/HC egos and let the dude who save the program once take a shot at doing it again.

One more stat: # First round draft picks Butch Davis 29

Mack Brown had 3x 10+ win seasons there.

Larry Fedora is on his way to a 10 win season and the ACC CG.

Did Butch do any of that?

He might not win NCs, but I'm sure he'd have SMU winning 10+ games, competing for conf titles, and playing in decent bowls.
