How do people feel about him? You can only have one head coach and I’ve picked the guy I want next. Richt won’t be fired this offseason, but, at this rate, he will not be here until the end of his contract. Additionally, the powers that be aren’t going to give up their power anytime soon. I don’t see any big jobs opening up this offseason so I’m banking on Babers/Diaz 2020 as my pipe dream. Let’s hope Manny doesn’t leave before then. Babers knows the ACC teams & recruiting landscape, recruits above expectations, and puts his players in a position to succeed because he is an offensive innovator.
If Babers hires the right offensive staff who will follow his lead and recruit hard, we will be successful. Manny diaz can afford to hire 4 green coaches and put up the #2 defense in the country because he knows what he’s doing.
Here are the Babers facts.
- 3 Years as a GA
- 4 years as an OC
- 6 years of ST
- 6-7 years of RB
- 1 year of DB
- 11 years of WR
- In his 7th year as HC
- 5k+ yards of offense in his first two years in the ACC
- Improved Eastern Illinois from 7 wins to 12 wins in year 2
- Developed Jimmy G (49ers qb)
- Improved Bowling Green from 8-6 to 10-3 in year 2
- Currently has Syracuse 7-2 in year 3 (losses total = 11 points)
Look how he CONNECTS with his players. He uses pop culture references, car models, etc. to contextalize history.
It disappoints me that we didn’t take a harder look at him when we had a vacancy. Our administrative learns the wrong lessons. When Randy didn’t workout, we avoided hiring coordinators or “Miami guys.” Since Golden didn’t work out, we avoided coaches who aren’t big names. We need to look at our candidates (position coaches included) as individuals rather than the environments they were apart of.
Babers is a SELF MADE man. He didn’t play in the NFL or have the playing career or connections to quickly rise through the ranks. It took 14 years before he came an OC. It took 26 years before he became a HC. He had to take his place and I doubt he wants to give it up after all this time.

Keep the right south Florida guys (Baez, Cooney, etc.) around Babers and we can be great under his leadership.
