Did Mario think ND was out of timeouts at the end?

I give the guy a ton of credit, and he does deserve plenty of it, but I'd be remiss to not point out flaws.

Go back and watch the game again. Mario had no idea ND still had 1 timeout left when we ran the ball on 3rd and 4 at the end of the game.

There was 1:14 left to go in the game, we had 3rd and 4 from the ND 30. After the 1 yard run from Brown, they cut to Mario, and you can see him confused and saying "NO WAY!". I'm 100% convinced he was yelling at the refs thinking ND was out of timeouts when they clearly had 1 left. He was thinking he could run it down to about 30 seconds and kick the FG, and even if you miss, you're probably going to overtime. Otherwise, why are you playing for a FG with a minute left?

So instead of running it down to 30 seconds like he thought they would, you have to kick with over a minute left, and now even if you make it, you leave them a full minute to just go down to get a FG to tie the game.

Thankfully the defense bailed us out and completely swallowed Carr on the last drive, but this is maddening stuff. The dude has so many positive qualities and I was fully in support of him getting this job, and still am because the program has been flipped, but **** you've been a Head Coach for 15 years now, this is stuff that an 8 year old playing Madden is on top of.

If I'm wrong, someone tell me how and I'll gladly delete this. But I was at the game and going berserk how we played it, and it still makes very little sense but it makes slightly more if you know he thinks they were out of timeouts. Watching it back, I almost fell off the couch and immediately said to myself, "Holy ****, he thought they were out of timeouts".

They have ND a timeout back in the 2nd half. Could be the reason for the confusion

Said and thought the same thing. It's mind-blowing how we had the perfect possession rule set up and executed it (7 with final 1st half poss and 7 with first 2nd half poss) and then, he can't count to three.

In yesterday’s presser. Went pretty in depth on it.

I'll go back and check it. Like I said, if I'm wrong, I'll gladly delete the thread. It's a bad look, obviously. But I'm not the only person who noticed, apparently.

I still absolutely despise the call even if they did know they had a TO left. 1 timeout is not a game-changer in college when the clock stops after a first down at the end of halves. A minute is plenty of time to get down the field and get into FG range, whether you have 1 timeout or 0. Throw the ******* football and try to A) make it easier on your kicker and B) run the clock to where it's a true make and win or miss and go to OT situation.

No I noticed it live as well, I’m with you.

But Dawson laid it out pretty well so maybe he knew and Mario didn’t? I know that would be at odds with the “Mario is calling every run play” crowd though.

In Mario's defense, nobody had informed him of the rule change regarding the two-minute timeout...

Also, he didn't realize those dots on the scoreboard stand for "timeouts remaining"...

Dawson described why we ran the ball on 3rd down. He was fully aware.

Just like we were fully aware to keep running the ball when we needed to kneel, correct? Just like Deion was also fully aware of him not using his 2 T.O’s left as CU bled out the clock?

Listen, pls understand some of the most prideful ppl in sports r coaches. They don’t like being second guessed or made to look incompetent, & will spin any narrative to justify lapse moments.

Yes, but Dawson's reasoning doesn't hold up. He made a big deal about it how advantageous it was for the defense to be defending up 3 from ND25 with ~1min left and 0 ND timeouts vs the same and 1 timeout. I don't think anything would have changed from Hetherman's perspective. He still would have told #3 & 4 to try to kill the QB everytime they snapped the ball.

As I said, let's just agree that this never happened, lol
