Diaz quote on the defense

it's different than golden and dnofrio every year saying we're going to attack more. that wasn't' their style and they never backed it up. it's the defense diaz runs so there's not reason to believe we aren't going to attack.

Diaz has no problem driving his knee into the skull of the memory of the old staff. He actually sounds offended by their tenure. Won't even watch the old tape. I'm dying at the indictment.

Still can't bear to call him "Coach D", however. Won't be sanitized for a long time.

Thred comments were directed ai Golden and Donofro
Recruting speed and slowing it down
The type of players available locally fitting the defense
And the 105 agains the run.

A lot better than "Working our tails off Joe"

"UM's Manny Diaz: "The biggest crime I can have as a coach is recruit speed & slow it down"

We back?

I know that there are a lot of guys on this forum who have been skeptical to say the least about the Diaz hire....but I love this quote and this approach to defense. Lets hope that it will translate to success on the field.

I also liked that he emphasized putting a good product on the field. I think he understands and knows what he wants to do, now comes the hard part teaching the kids up. But, I think this style is like first nature to these kids. I believe they will pick it up quick and run with it.

SIAP but some quotes from rivals...

"We’ll assess what we have, find out what our guys do best and we have enough variety in our coverage to keep the offense off balance."

"I don't want to watch a lot of what's been done in the past, because we're going to ask them to do something different. So the guys that maybe couldn't do it all of a sudden start to show up. So you really don't know what you have until we get on the field and find out who we are this spring. All of a sudden guys (may) start to emerge. So we'll find out in spring."

"First and foremost we want to be defined by our toughness," Diaz said. "And there's a lot of things that go into that. But if we will be tough, physically tough, mentally tough, we'll play a lot better defense. We want to be aggressive. It's not just going to a 4-3 - you can be a 4-3 and be a read 4-3. You can be a 3-4 and be an attack 3-4. It's a mentality in terms of the way we'll play blocks. We want our defensive line to penetrate, and that should sound familiar because it was here in the '80s when that really became the trend in college football. So we're really not doing anything that Miami should not be used to."

My two favorites from that interview:

“Who doesn’t want to attack? It almost sounds cliché,” Diaz said. “There’s a running joke. Every new defensive coordinator you hire says, ‘We’re going to be more aggressive than the last guy.’" (Ain't that the truth?)

And:

“We’ve got some guys, but we can’t be defined by talent alone,” he said. “That’s all everyone has talked about – we’re talented, we’re talented. [But] we’ve got to… be productive, stop walking around patting ourselves on the back for being talented. Let’s learn how to be productive."

^^^ This right here. Every freaking year we heard it from fans and pundits alike "Miami's got the talent. We're so talented. Look at these talented players we've recruited." Great - now turn it into a product or take your talented *** to the bench.

putting players in right position to make plays would help. using chad thomas as a 2 gaper is stupid, it was clear when allowed to penatrate the kid could be disruptive as all get out.

we have kids with alot of talent that in this new system shoudl shine. if they don't is on them. they are finally being used in a system that will play to there speed and allow them to attack and not sit back and read and react. guys liek chad thomas can penatrate not take on 2 blockers , u wont see norton trying to take on a gaurd, and center , that alone should improve the d

i believe he also said i can start all freshman and finish 105th against the run

Exactly what my beef w NO D and Folden was. Lets recruit elite S FLA speed and tell them to pay contain instead of attack (the thing they were taught there whole life to do).

I know were not expected to be a top 10 or even top 15 defense but ill be happy just watching them attack again. We havent seen miami defense in 5 years.
This. If we're improving on D and fun to watch I'm excited. I always left for another beer whenever we've been on D the past few years.

The one thing I will say about Diaz is that he "wins the press conference" thats for god **** sure. A gambling buddy of mine heard an interview of his and is ready to put money on our line next year. (I think its going to be 8.5...he thinks 8 by the way).. lol. He can definitely get anyone fired up about that Defense.

8.5 is an intelligent line. Anything less than that is giving away $$$. Won a G on that line last season at 7. I missed the 5.5 at the start but knew Miami was an 8 win team. This season I say 9 +/-1 with a very good chance to win 10.
