Two things:
We need the job to look good so the pay needs to be high.

"Regardless, UM people marveled how Richt walked away from all of that money, well over $16 million left on his contract. Richt has earned considerable admiration for that. "...CMR is the man for this

I remember laughing at people on boards saying Richt should step down. I thought there was no chance in **** he would ever do that and especially so soon, we got lucky.

When you factor in the buyout we had to pay it'd end up being ~$4.2m per year over the 5 years

the man walks the walk. he knew that he couldn't live up to his contract and that staying would hurt his school, his players, and (likely) his family, so he walked away instead of forcing the school to dump him and running with the money. you can criticize richt for a lot of things that held him back as a head coach, but his character and integrity are second to none. sadly that doesn't get you anywhere in modern college ball.

Now all he has to do is prove its money well spent.

Obviously no one wants to walk away from $16 million, but I’m sure he’s made 2-3x that over his career. Being miserable ain’t worth the money if you don’t need it.

CMR is the man for only stealing $12 million when he could’ve stolen $28 million?

I guess it’s a matter of perspective.

Not sure what is so earth shattering about this. $3.1 million per year puts Manny in the low 40's ranking-wise of highest paid coaches.
