Diaz announced UM won't play with the full 85 in 2019

I don't see how we could get to 85. For 2019, we're so loaded in the more recent classes that we hit the 25-per-class ceiling. But even once we fix this front-loading problem and go into Fall camp at 85 in 2020 or 2021, we'll end up losing some guys who get buried on the depth chart and want to transfer out.

Rok's list of expendables shows that at least the talent level is improving. We had 2-3x that a couple years back. Knowles is a 5th-year glue guy, zero reason to push him out. Burns was a bet that we lost on an injury-prone but awesome raw talent, can't be mad at that. Kennedy, Dykstra, Martin and Brown were eval failures, pure and simple. Those guys should be pushed out once we start hitting our caps. But why do that at this point? Let them play through 2019, especially given how thin we are on the OL, and then use their spots for the 2020 class.

Of all the kids who left that could still be on the team, it would have been nice to keep the guys that went pro (Joe Jacks, Homer, Boulware), as well as Richards, obviously. Will be interesting to see how DJ Johnson does out west. Would have liked to keep him, too. The rest wouldn't be marginally more helpful than what we already have.

So in a Miami Herald Coach announced Miami won't have the full 85 scholarship spots filled during the 2019 season.

So it sounds like the post spring game evaluation addition by subtraction roster management has begun.

Go Canes
How about grab a quality O lineman with at least one of those scholarships

Ha. Looking at this list, how many of those do you wish were still here? 10+/-?

Not many but it becomes a challenge to build a program when players are cycling through at this rate. This year's team will be largely dependent on the classes of 2017 & 2018, which is fine because those were great hauls, but we'll continue being a "young team" until we recruit the right players and keep them here.

I respect Rolle, but his words are a little out of perspective and a bit unfair to the current players. He referenced that Dorsey was a general and people listened to him because Reed and Andre Johnson would back him up. Those are two Hall of Famers, one of which is arguably the best football player of all time. Of course people listened.

It is definitely on the players to take ownership of the locker room, but it is on the coaches to bring in the caliber of players that can compete for championships year in and year out.

Rolle, a beast in his own right, was only a freshman when we won the NC. He was able to benefit from have several future College and NFL Hall of Famers littered throughout the roster. We have loads of talent on our current roster, but Rolle is a bit out of touch on this one.
Rolle was awesome, but he was also part of the core that started the rapid decline of UM football. He was just along for the ride for our last NC.

He also did his share of going out and had a little run in of his own. I wish the former players would do less yapping about how perfect they were and how awful the current guys are.

Rolle should know **** well just how important leadership from the HC is, as he was right in the middle of the Davis/Coker transition where the bottom fell out because the HC was a trash leader.

2020 we should have a full 85. We'll actually need some attrition just to be able to bring in a full 25-man class

For 2019 we dont have enough initial counters left to get there, so the only way Diaz could get there would be by putting more walk-ons on scholarship.

Agree

Out of touch? Rolle nails it & is only repeating what Manny has said numerous times since he took over.

It's near impossible to be at exactly 85 scholarships unless you want to start pulling scholarships from guys already on the roster. If a guy has graduated and you mutually agree to part ways before his eligibility is up, ok. But you can't just chase off every guy who isn't meeting expectations. If you're plan reasonably well, you should be able to consistently be in the 80-85 range and that's more than enough to field an entire roster

Numbers at each position are mostly fine but there has been a lot of turnover recently. There's only 11 players who have been at Miami longer than 2 seasons, and just 2 on offense:

Irvin
Brown
Patchan
Bethel
Martin
Shaq
Pinckney
McCloud
Knowles
Finley
Spicer
****.

Another issue we’ve had since Randy was here is recruiting guys that actually stay on the roster.

Nails what exactly? Everyone and their mother knows that it is on the players to have ownership of the locker room. One doesn't even have to be a sports fan to know that. So again, what exactly did he nail?

When former players act as if they walked the straight and narrow while the were in Miami, in College, at the age of 18-21, they come across as the parents that constantly belittle their own kids struggles by telling them stories of how back in their day, they used to walk 20 miles to school in the snow, up a hill, with one foot and a peg leg that was signed by Howard Schnellenberger.

The point is if Rolle thinks that there needs to be more leadership by the players, what good is it doing for him talk about it to the media? Why not take up some form of mentorship with the current players, especially the DB's....similar to how Beason, William's, and Vilma took up mentorship roles with our current linebackers by watching film with them, teaching them how to deal with younger players, how to address the media, how to balance school and football along with being in my Miami, etc... That real leadership! There is nothing good that is going to come from our "former greats" telling the media that these young bloods are not like how we used to be.

I’ll bet you that we won’t

Signing terrible players that will never contribute is a shackle on the program. Expect those scholarships to stay available for late transfers or walk-ons.

It's likely that next year will be the first time we'll be at 85 in like a decade, no joke. This yr is might be the first time in a while we are even above 80 tbh. Granted, that's with 4 walk on guys having scholarships....

Then again, we can only bring like 26 or 27 next class. We are guaranteed to have minimum of 18 spots open due to graduating seniors. If 10 NON seniors leave the team by next season, we have 0% chance at being at 85 for 2020. And that's definitely realistic, considering 1-2 qbs will likely transfer, Deejay might declare, Burns might transfer, Marshall Few was a walk on who could get pt if he transfers to a smaller school, Jeff Thomas, Trajan Bandy, and Garvin could/will declare early,....thats at least 7 right there that are almost guaranteed to leave.
