Desmond Phillips - Dade County All-Star Game MVP (Talks UM)

this board was in love with Choc the same way and he has done nothing here. u guys acted like he would come in and start day one. let Coach Richt handle this.

That's because our coaches are dumb as sht and he should be a rs freshman with 3 years to play. You have to stack talent. every player isn't going to come in and play right away. Willis M must have been a piece of sht because he didn't start until 3 years into his career...and then should have won the Heisman as the best offensive player in the country.

Willis had two HOF Rb's in front of him. Choo just got passed up by a true Frosh that just happens to have been an RB hi whole life. So he already knows how to pass block, carry the ball tight, hit the hole or wait for it to open, etc. Like I said in the other thread. If we hit on the WR we are targeting in this class sand the next, when would this kid see the field? Because those other guys, who happen to be highly rated WR already, are close to as fast and are much more polished.

And it is funny how no one commented on the kids fumble in the end zone. And he got smoked on that play, let alone the true best players from Dade were not even on the field. His highlights are nice, he shows a lot of speed. He looks like a nice prospect, who could develop. But his numbers were not nearly as amazing as everyone makes them out to be. Passed for 1300 yards and rushed for 600 in ten or eleven games? Is that supposed to be amazing. Especially when most of his yardage was as the QB when you have virtually no one accounting for you on D. I mean look at most of his runs, there is NO ONE accounting for him. He is ten to fifteen yards down field prior to being touched. Again, not down on the kid. And if Richt decides to offer I am fine. I think this team needs an injection of SPEED and that kid definitely has that. But I am not all up in arms over it either.

Willis was behind 2 hof rbs, but that coaching staff actually knew what they doing. This one **** sure didn't. If coached and developed do u not think T Gray has a higher ceiling than Yearby? I do but I cant tell because the staff was too busy throwing bubble screens, having lbs cover slot receivers, 2 gapping, and rolling Crawford out there while Deon sat on the bench for us to find out.

Umm, you just tried to defend that fact that Choc got passed up by a freshman by referring to the ****** defensive scheme and the passing game. Fact is, if Gus were healthy Choc is fourth string..... None of what you said makes a bit of difference to the point I was making. I understand the previous staff was crap. My point is, great athletes have a hard time passing good athletes that have already played the position. Sure I think Choc has a higher ceiling but I am not willing to watch him fumble three times a game while he figures it out. I think it is about mixing great athletes with guys that played the position in high school. Who is the last guy that switched positions and was great. Heck, we could not figure out what to do in four years with Hester or Sam Shields. ****, the NFL still isn't sure what to do with Hester. Seems like a waste of talent to only be a kick returner, but he has never been able to translate all his god given athletic ability into being a legit football player. How about Jason Geathers, all the talent in the world. Big fast etc. but never really figured it out. So there is still the ability to translate to a position that has to happen as well. Learn the game, don't just be a great athlete, or just be really fast. There have been a million fast wr that never really amounted to ****.

if golden wouldn't of busted on AC gus wouldn't even be here. Gus is a bus,t so please don't try to compare Choc to a guy who avoids contact.

Again, your missing the point. Its the simple fact that he cannot see the field. That is my point. He is struggling to pass up RBs. He came in as an athlete. And he has been passed by a frosh and in being two other guys on top of that. So, what is the point of taking a kid like Phillips is we land the already stacked WR we are after. He will not see the field. Because while he is learning the nuances of the position, they will be making an impact. Then if we land more studs next year, he gets passed up by them too. So if you have studs, you do not need to take project types. I used other players who also came in as ATH types that also struggled to find a position. This is not how I feel about Choc. I feel like he should have been getting some burn, just to expose him to more game action and build him up. Because he is a plus athlete. But if he can't seem to get past those other guys on the chart, it says something. And what is even the point of bringing up AC. Because if he was here, choc would also be behind him on the depth chart too.

Still had us in his top when he was on the radio seems like he wants to play here

Well, if its Temple, Syracuse or the U. Where you trying to play? And if we miss on any of our higher rater WR, then give him a shot. But if you can get the guys you really want, that already play the position, why take a flier on a kid that may never see the field and has to learn the position. I think his issue is, he is looking for some kind of guarantee on PT. But maybe not. Personally, I hope we take the flier, kid has elite speed and to me that is VERY important. But I also understand the value of having guys that are equally talented, and possess the skills you need. Rather than have to teach it.

Is Ice Harris the rb coach at UM? Where did he coach before that? So when you answer those questions and think about our coaching staff as a whole get back at me.

There's too many legit WR's in SFL who've actually practiced at the position to worry about kids like this. Love his speed but all these QB's who end up being WR's and RB's needs to stop.

Our three thinnest positions are WR, LB and DB -- the positions South Florida is most famous for.

Never pass up the opportunity to add an exceptional athlete and speed talent to your roster. He's one of those game changing type athletes that just make plays. The other prospects, Victor, Pie, may have more receiving film, but neither would be the playmaker this kid is. Some cats just got that ****!

So your saying the only reason Walton played is because of Ice? Not out of the realm of possibility, but there is also the chance that he is just a more complete RB than him. He is a much better pass catcher, carries the ball the way a RB is supposed to. and understand blocking VERY well. Kid made a couple of SAVING blocks this year. Which is saying a lot for a freshman. So there is also the productivity that Walton brought. Maybe your right, maybe Choc will tear it up with the new staff here. I sure hope so. Watch UM backs go for gains of 3 makes me sick to my stomach. At no point this year did I feel like we were about to break one... Because I didn't think those dudes can out run angles, or run away from defenders. We surely do need an infusion of UM speed back!

I'm glad you posted this. If both players have similar ability to play the position but one of those players is now playing for his former high school coach, you don't think his familiarity with Walton helps Mark. Football is full of this kind of stuff. What is our new head coach doing. Hiring guys he's familiar with. And all those things you mentioned as far as skills. Isn't that his job to teach Choc those nuances of the position. His vast experience as a RB's coach in college surely helped him here.....oh my bad was never a rb coach at this level. Only a high school coach with ties to the community in Miami.
We need speed and play making ability. I'm tired of our running backs getting 20 yards gains, when they should be touchdowns.

Ok, so why is he not ahead of Gus or Yearby. Thats right, those guys have always been RB's so they are more ready to contribute. You do not need to teach them how to hold the ball so they don't fumble on three straight plays against an fcs school. He shows talent no doubt, he shows speed. He also looks like you just took him off the playground, which would make sense as to why he is struggling to make his way up the depth chart. And one could even say he is moving down it. Now back to the player involved in this conversation. Which players currently, in this class or even the next class do you see him surpassing? I see some pretty polished players coming in. We have some pretty good ones. And next year does not exactly look like a down year for WR. So again, why do we need to take a fast kid with virtually NO WR experience? Odds are he never surpasses the guys that have had the benefit of playing their positions their whole lives. There really are not that many cases where a kid makes that transition well. Whether it be a kid trying to do it CFB to the pros or HS to CFB. There are more fails than successes. I am just trying to use one that is currently on our team. There is obviously no shortage of talent in Choc but he is struggling to gain playing time because other guys similarly as talented and have the experience are hard to surpass while you learn the nuances of the position. And yes I do think he should have gotten more carries or KO returs if they were not going to shirt him. However, he would probably be tearing it up at a USF or something, where he's blatantly the best they have got and would get the burn regardless.

i had friends who were coaches and saw Gray's videos and said he was overrated. all the people on this board said he would start day one. Problem is you guys are trying to find "gems" so u can say "I found this kid day 1" I will go with who Mark Richt wants. i been here before. I heard Tyre Brady was gonna be a stud too. End of the day, there is a reason Mark Richt was OC at FSU and HC at UGA and UM and we are on message boards talking about who we like and dont like.

Nobody said that Gray or Brady would start right away. Gray never played running back and Brady barely played organized football in high school. Both guys should be redshirt freshmen right now.

And even if those guys end up failing, it still won't mean much. Our four star OOS kids during the Golden era were Jalen Grimble, Raphael Kirby, Kevin Olsen, Beau Sandland, Corn Elder, AQM, Kiy Hester, Brad Kaaya and Braxton Berrios. Four busts, two studs, an average player and a couple incompletes. Does that mean we should ignore four star national guys? Of course not.
