Mel Kiper Big Board - Top 25 prospects ranking for 2018 NFL draft - Where Josh Rosen of UCLA Bruins, Sam Darnold of USC Trojans rank

3. **Derwin James, S, Florida State

Previous rank: 3

James played only two games in 2016 after suffering a torn meniscus in his left knee. The former five-star recruit was terrific as a freshman for the Seminoles, with 91 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. FSU has had a miserable season after losing starting quarterback Deondre Francois in the opener, but James is a real talent. The 6-3, 211-pound James has two interceptions with 11 pass breakups, and he's second on the team in tackles (72). There's a good chance he will be the highest-rated defender come April's draft.

James had a very good Freshman year played only 2 games in 2016 and had a medicore year this year. Jaquan Johnson has comprable stats to James's Freshman year. Does that make Johnson a 1st round pick?

Derwin James Stats

Freshman 2015 91 Tackles 9.5 Tackles for a loss 4.5 Sacks 0 Int's 2 Forced Fumbles 2 Fumbles Recovered
Redshirt Sophmore 2017 72 Tackles 5 Tackles for a loss 1 Sack 1 Int 0 Forced Fumbles 0 Fumbles Recovered

Jaquan Johnson

The NFL is all about measurables. So it’s clear why people are projecting him to go high.

He’s most likely going to go to a team in the 1st round but man do I feel bad for whatever team is stuck with him LOL.

Once people start digging into the tape of Derwin they're going to find one thing, there isn't any tape on him doing anything.

The list of All-Time NFL greats from FSU is laughable.

Here’s another bust for you.

FSU did have quite a run of DL busts during the 90s.

Corey Simon, their DT, was the one I really wished we would have got. Maybe their best DT - one of the best anyway.

And he clearly wasn't a bust - quite good with the Eagles for awhile.

As a cowboys fan and our absolute garbage we put out at the saftey positions the Cowboys boards have been flooded with Derpwin james being the truth and how jerry needs to sale the farm to go get this Game changer...

I cringe....

This ^ He's 6'3" and 211. If he runs a 4.5 or lower, NFL GMs will be drooling. For some of these guys it doesn't matter if he plays like a bum, as long as he looks like a stud. "We'll coach him up" will be the mantra of whichever team reaches for him

He looked pretty good as a freshman and much better than he did this year. Which means they would probably blame FSU coaching on him not getting any better

Ray ray Armstrong with more hype. Ppl are so desperate for this guy to be the real deal but he hasn’t delivered.

I wouldn't necessarily be a doubter of anyone in their secondary. Florida State's pass defense is excellent, much better than anything they've had in years. I would say they are easily the most underrated major college team in the nation right now, since pass defense has huge correlation to national honors.

Note the 2017 leaders and how it aligns with the top ranked teams. That's why I always list pass defense as the most important variable toward winning a title:
