2026 Derrek Cooper 5* RB/ATH from Chaminade Commits to Texas

A bunch of hype for a RB. It’s more about optics than the player IMO.

I just don’t see elite RB 5 star on film.

This has nothing to do with Miami not getting him. This whole thing is more about Mario and Miami needing to make a statement and keeping a 5 star home.

There are many other pure RB out ther

While I don't disagree, its tough to have Miami losing out on the top 2 skill players(Cooper and Russel) in SFL for this class, when both were perceived Cane Locks only a few months back.

Miami's got 7 of the top 50 players in the state so far. Thats good, but not great. And this is coming for someone whos been praying for the staff to actually recruit nationaly, not just focusing on the region(FL,GA, AL, Miss, LA).

Dammned if you, Dammed if you don't

over this one already, let him walk. We’re not paying this kid a million plus, it’s just not good business, emotions aside.
I agree with you pretty much if the only thing preventing us from getting the commit is the NIL number. I would rather devote our resources to the Oline and QB and TE on offense. The RBs and WRs don't have to be the elites for the offense to be high powered if you take care of those other spots.

Then we should have taken Jae.

Yes optics would be bad. Impact on the 2026 team next year if Cooper doesn’t pick Miami…ehhh I don’t see much.

Didn't want to say anything at the time and get everyones panties in a bunch but I would have loved to lock in Jae Lamar right after his visit and be done with RB if that were a possibility.

If Cooper were ok coming in as a LB, yeah thats a 5 star player. At RB... not sure Jae wont end up the higher draft pick in 3 years.

But regardless, its always a loss when a 5 star player leaves your backyard.
