Didn’t really follow it but was JT also interfering with Big Joe?
It wasn't that he was interfering directly, no. But there is a lot of turmoil there from a coaching perspective. Or one person employed one strategy and used it in particular instances while the other who had the support of virtually everybody wanted to employ things in a different manner and use different techniques. Myself I love JT as a person. Great dude. But I think he took on way too much responsibility for where he's at as a coach. That's not his fault that's ours. Or for those that need to hear it that's Mario's. Yes he's a great recruiter. But this is just exactly what I'm talking about for the people complaining about Kevin Beard. I don't want somebody that just recruits and struggles in coaching. We need dudes that know how to develop whatever and whoever is in his room. That's it. I have great confidence that Damion will have no problem with that.

The issue is that there are few, and I mean few guys that can recruit at a high level AND teach at a similar level. Nick Saban used to say that when he built out a staff, he wanted a mix of teachers and recruiters. When asked "Why can't you get everyone that can do both?", he stated that was impossible because to be a great teacher and a great recruiter required two completely separate set of skills and there are few people that have all the skills. Usually a great recruiter is at best a decent teacher and the great teachers are okay recruiters(at best).

A relevant case study is Dan Mullen vs. Mario Cristobal. Dan Mullen is a terrible recruiter, but if I needed someone to tutor a QB, he'd be on my short list. Mario on the other hand isn't a great teacher type, but he's a tireless recruiter that knows how to sell his vision of the program and the program itself.

Are there outliers? Yes, Ed Orgeron is the guy that jumps out as someone that can do both. Ed is one of the best defensive line coaches I've ever seen, and remains the gold standard in recruiting. That said, Ed is unique.
