I’m hung over and have somehow bull****ted my way through (pretty impressively I might add) multiple meetings today. I’ll **** around.

Commodus grew up with his grandfather (on his mom’s side) being Antoninus Pius and his father being Marcus Aurelius, 2 of the best Roman emperors. Commodus lost his twin brother at 4. Then a few years later Marcus pulled him from Rome and took him along his campaigns to secure the boarders. He grew up among soldiers and away from the Roman elite.

His only real connection and education of Roman politics cane from Marcus, who was more stoic, soldier, philosopher than he was politician. Marcus also had a situation that had only come up once before and it was a century earlier. Having a biological son to call your heir. The 5 good emperors of Pax Ramana were adopted and named heir based off merit. Commodus didn’t earn anything, but Marcus knew he either had to name Commodus heir or kill him to prevent civil war.

When Marcus eventually dies, Commodus is named Emperor of Rome at 18-19. He’s only known war through the campaigns with his dad. Bro wants to go back to Rome and spread some seed. He also knows nothing of Rome or Roman politics.

After he abandoned his father’s campaign prematurely (that’s ****ed) he gets back to Rome. The empire is in debt and he has no idea how to govern. Soon after that his sister plots with her husband to kill Commodus to take power. They don’t succeed. He kills the bruhs and exiles his sister (who he kills soon after).

To try and fix the debt issue, Commodus starts diluting the silver in the Denarius. Because he’s a young idiot who is pouring water in his parent’s vodka bottle trying to fix the problem.

The Roman Empire was also being crushed by a plague around this time.

So you have a teen with absolute power, who only knows army camps, has no idea how to govern, trying to control debt by inflating the currency, dealing with a plague, and is paranoid about his family trying to kill him. Not to mention he followed the 5 good emperors.

Commodus wasn’t great, but he was screwed from the jump.

*will edit at 3AM after extensive drinking*
But could Commodus recruit?
Actually have read and still have a copy of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Good read for all you Stoics out there.
