Demond Williams enters portal

There should be buyout clauses in these contracts at least. Like coaches. You can’t force somebody to stay somewhere. But if they leave they, maybe pay back a portion or all of the money they may have received

But what is difference between Coaches and Athletes?

Do you believe coaches should honor the contracts they sign?
I do. I believe if either breaks the contract, it should be handled similar to the NFL. Which I understand would be difficult to do.

My take is simply this: we just dealt with this securing Lucas, so it may not be in our best interest to do it again so soon (especially with another B1G team).

Question.

You have a corporate job. Big time. Major employer. You move to Virginia Beach. There are a million people in the Hampton Roads area. The job who have lined up and you agreed to move your family for has offered a salary package of $220K. But because you move in the area, and you work a corporate job, other recruiters in the area are tipped off that you just moved and have a skill set that fits their employer (and yes this happens). A recruiter contacts you the Friday before you start work on Monday, takes you out to lunch, and offers you a $275K salary, 4 weeks paid vacation, a company car (include company gas and insurance), and 3 months paid paternity leave when you and your wife have a child.

Do you tell this recruiter "no, thanks, because I already gave my commitment to another employer"?
I’m with you. It would depend on how these contracts are drawn up - if they’re similar to Corporate America, it is what it is, no harm no foul. However, if these schools are threatening to sue, there has to be a binding clause of some sort.

I’d stay away. At some point these young men need to honor the contract they signed, if they actually signed one. Hopefully he goes to LSU or Oregon and we take Leavitt

Part of "honoring the contracts they signed" would be complying with all clauses, including any recoupment/repayment clauses that are triggered when a player "under contract" decides to transfer.

Until you have a Collective Bargaining Agreement that treats college football players like NFL players, you can't act as if college football contracts are the equivalent of NFL player contracts.

So the contact basically goes counter to an NCAA rule stating the school is required to enter the kid within 48 hours of the paperwork being submitted. That seems dubious at best. If that is possible what is to prevent schools from just writing contacts around every rule.

I do not believe the CONTRACT is counter to the NCAA rules.

I believe the the CONDUCT is counter to the NCAA rules.

The school is saying "we will not put your name in the Portal". They are not saying "the contract tells us not to put your name in the Portal".

Well, seems they will pull a Wisconsin and was in his contract too I believe

Have you read about claims of his contract?

Again, just to be clear. As I said during the Xavier Lucas situation, the CONTRACT is a separate issue.

I was merely addressing the failure to enter a kid's name into the Portal, and what the kid can do to combat that.

All other contractual issues can be decided in court. But "Portal entry" and "unenrolling" and "enrolling" and "eligibility" issues are immediate ones that cannot wait for an entire year for discovery to begin.

At least you’re fair I can respect that.

This Wild West sh*t is unsustainable. I lathe the NCAA as an insitution but there have to be some rules. I expect:

- Some kind of spending caps, perhpas relative to P4/P5/conference size, etc.
- Tightening up of transfer/portal rules. Congtress may have to be involved
- Sensible and defined transfer and visit windows
- Some kind of enforecement for signed agreements (but this can be a double edged sword)

As far as most bang for buck, this is where they need to focus their efforts on - the portal. Put some guardrails around it.
