Demond Williams enters portal

i agree this seems to be LSU. he was committed to Kiffin in the past and is a similar player to Chambliss. Leavitt left LSU without committing.

more controversy and bad press for Kiffin if he's getting sued

Let’s remind UW that courts don’t enforce specific performance, meaning that a court will not force Williams to play at UW. In fact, you can’t even sue for specific performance because it is unenforceable.

As I wrote with the Lucas situation, what UW can sue for is damages it feels it will incur if Williams leaves. They will likely argue that the loss of Williams impacts their win total, which would cost them $$$$. But its all kind of BS because there is no crystal ball which definitively proves how many games UW wins with Williams as opposed to without Williams. And more importantly, how much less money UW will make if Williams leaves. The fact is with revenue sharing, it is unlikely that Williams leaving costs UW any $$$.

If I was Williams, and I was the next school, I would not be concerned about a court forcing Williams to play for UW or preventing Williams from playing somewhere else. It will cost some money in legal fees, but that is about it.

For now and all such future lawsuits, just remember that courts don’t enforce specific performance. Civil courts function to make the aggrieved party financially whole.
What about a noncompete?

My only concern with him is that he is 5’10-5’11, 180lbs, but so was Bryce Young.

Had a very good year for the Huskies as a first time starter. He would have multiple years of eligibility.

Not a good look for Leavitt that LSU passed on him and these guys are reportedly paying $2 million more than UW.

Courts also do not like to enforce non-competes. And they have to be limited geographically and for a specific amount of time.
A court will not enforce a non-compete that prevents a person playing anywhere in the US. MAYBE a court would prevent Williams from playing for WSU if there is a non competes in place, but even that is suspect.

Non-competes are out of favor with courts.

I know I know, old man yells at cloud and Xavier Lucas benefitted us but this is the stuff that gives me the ick. I don't blame the kid if the money is right, but he signed a contract literally last week and now he is gone. I don't blame Washington for gearing up for battle.

The sooner this sport just makes these kids employees, the sooner these contracts become completely enforceable and we get some honest-to-god guardrails.

FWIW, he is a good player but seems like an odd fit for us.
No employment contract, even with collective bargaining and rev-sharing and… (whatever else they think of that officially turns college football into the nfl minor league), is “completely enforceable.” Have you never heard of an nfl player holding out or an nba player demanding a trade? A contract is not an agreement for indentured servitude.

It is funny knowing that, in about 5 years, the starting quarterback at UW will realistically be traded to UM in exchange for 2 freshman linemen and cash.
