Demanding Perfection

I've been a cane since the 70s and their is no other college team in American that gets the respect from other Colleges that the Canes have gotten over the years as our canes have (and that's taking into account that we are a private school). Teams look at us with respect knowing that we have/have had some of the best talent in America. This is no knock on the Alabama's, Oklahomas etc., its just that our teams have this mystique about them, even in the leaner years. What hurts is our demand for perfection, the anger in some people is also heard by our players and recruits and coaches. I agree Al Folden was the wrong hire for the Canes and South Florida, he did not understand So. Florida and tried to turned the U into something that it wasn't ever going to be. But I do believe that CMR is moving this team in the right direction, the program is moving forward and bringing the fan base back and rooting for their home team again. Hope not to **** people off, just my view from and Old Cane.

I've been going to Canes games since the days a $5 bill to the lady working the turnstile got you in. I guarantee many of the he same people worshiping Butch on the regular are the same ones who screamed for his head in the worst years, especially after 66-13 Syracues in year 4 and the 43-10 beatdown at VT in year 5.

I sat in that OB year after year listening to him get called every name in the book and anyone who says they saw the 2001 team coming at that time is a liar. It was a miserable, joyless time.

.

You are absolutely correct. It was miserable. I remember sitting there in 1997-98 legitimately wondering if I'd ever see Miami beat Florida St. again, much less win a national title.

You could see that the team was getting better at the end of 1998 with that UCLA game, and then the beginning of 99 with the opening win over OSU, and the unfortunate Chafie Fields game against PSU that could have easily been a win, but I'm not going to sit here and lie to you and say I saw 2001 coming, because I didn't.

I do believe that the success here since the early 1980s has made the typical Miami fan more demanding of perfection. ****, even after wins these days, the performance of the coaches and players is picked apart to a crazy level. I saw each Miami national title team play every single game, and the funny thing is, none of those teams were perfect, even the 3 unbeaten ones. Today's Internet would have crucified Jimmy's 1987 team for squeaking by Toledo 24-14 (yes, 1987 3-7 Toledo, not even anywhere near as good as today's Toledo) at home. The vaunted 1991 team barely got by unranked Boston College, a close call that the 2001 team would repeat. Jimmy's 1985 team got blown out by Tennessee - with that and the 1986 Fiesta, everyone would have been saying Jimmy can't win the big game, Jimmy can't take the next step, etc, etc.

Back in ancient days, when I was at the U, no one complained about the team's performance. We went to the OB to support the Canes and actually WATCH a game. Many times I sat next to opposing team fans and we would actually discuss what we saw on the field. No one trash talked. When tbe game was over, win or lose, we remembered what a good time we had. MONEY and the NCAA have ruined this mystique. If you can't relate all I can say is you shoulda been there. For the youngsters on this board, back in those days the play by play announcer always called us MIAMA......not Miami.....I can still hear it, "Miama's ball on the LSU 5 yard line"......Man, life was goooood back then!

Are we talking the 1950s?

We’ve been great fans since Richt got here. We’ve changed the narrative on Miami fans.

No more half empty stadium pictures pregame.
No more home games where the opposing teams fans outnumbered or matched ours.
No more neutral sites where we barely attended.

Can Richt change the narrative on him as a head coach? So far? No.

He still wins a lot of games but not the big ones and his qb play is suspect just like at UGA outside of Murray and Stafford.

Until one of those change I’m gonna assume he is what he was at UGA. I don’t want Richt to be here for 15 years and do the same thing he did there.

So dumb. He beat the #3 team in the country by 33 points. He beat VT by 3 touchdowns in a de facto coastal championship game. He destroyed a top 15 WVU team for our first bowl win in a decade. Has he won all of his big games? Clearly not but your post is incorrect.

Wow, you must not have been on Canes forums during the early 2000s lol.
F ya I was but I was in my late 20's drinking like a horseback and now i am in my late 40's ...not drink as much and try to enjoy the game...all about adult perspective. I will also add these crappy losses at Cincinnati Notre Dame Pittsburgh Louisville Virginia Tech Oklahoma and this year Dallas Plus all the bowl games have taken my toll on me. I guess I'll leave the road games the Young Bucks

Agree all fans complain - even Bama .........but the early 2000 teams underperformed
- When you look at the talent on the field no way we lose to Washington - Butch avg game day coach
- 2001 Should have Lost to Va Tech and BC --- Coker throw him out
- 2002 - Coker becomes clappy

Lol let’s celebrate those wins and disregard losing 4 in a row twice. The second time around getting embarrassed in the acc title game, and in Dallas.

As a fan who pays a lot of money to go to those game I would atleast expect us to be competitive and we weren’t.

I’m not gonna follow Richt blindly. He’s got a lot of things to fix and he’s had 3 recruiting classes and the issues remain the same. Our OL sucks. Our qb play sucks. Where’s this offensive guru? This qb whisperer? I don’t see it. Sorry for calling it for what it is.

I’m not gonna be ok with continuously looking overmatched vs Big time teams.

Nobody is “disregarding” them besids you. You are the one disregarding the big wins he does have. Like I said, he’s won some and lost some. Enjoy arguing with yourself about the other stuff while you move the goalposts.

15 years of getting embarrassed regularly on national TV will make you a bit jaded. The trend continued this year with LSU. They went conservative in the 3rd/4th quarter but I got the feeling watching that game they could have hung 50 on us had they so desired.

Size up our last 4 recruiting class and R

Relax yourself, you think recruiting starts in December when Richt got hired? Its starts 3 or 4 years out. The first class were mostly Golden targets, we got some good players but nowhere near the depth, the last 2 class were #11 and #6. Not the 20s Golden was fighting Umass for. We recruited well in the OL, even at QB and TE. The problem is all those positions are developmental positions. Things alot of the board dont want to hear. Richt is doing is job, mistake yes but most rational people can see they have a plan and the recruiting is going well overall. Once they start recruiting better at DT or developing the ones we get we will be ok. The last class under Golden was 26, then Richt had 23, 11 and 6. The first 2 are not good enough and that's from the previous staph. We should have another top 15 this cycle top 10 if we close strong and a sure top 10 or 5 in 2020. Thats championship recruiting level

Ultimately, it comes down to recruiting. I saw an interview with Jimbo on SEC Network and he was asked "what will it take to get to Alabama's level?" His answer..."a ton of great talent".

As the saying goes, "sometimes its not the X's and O's, it's the jimmies and joes"

I don’t think we’re complaining v. having legitimate gripes.

In Coker’s regime, it was how about getting off your @&& and coach! Stop allowing the players run the asylum.

In the Shannon era, it was how about getting a real O-Coordinator and stop recruiting one school.

In Golden’s era, it was get the **** out of here w ur corny tie and take ur butt **** friend w u.

With Richt, it’s get a real QB coach, get a real O-Coordinator, get a real OL coach, get a real ST coach, and get Rosier and Feagles out of here.

All legitimate.

See this is what I’m saying. Recruiting isn’t the issue. It’s all those things you mentioned. Richt jr on the staff might be worse than having Dnorfio on the staff. Let’s see how this season plays out and make some coaching staff changes afterwards. If we don’t then we know we’re ok with status quo and that’s not ok.

I don't demand perfection, my expectations are commiserate with the talent level of the players & the Coach.

If Richt is as great as people say he is then shouldn't we expect great results? And if year 3 is too early then when? (I'm being for real, tell me when so I can stfu about it lol)

Should I just lower my expectations? I'm asking honestly, because I don't want to come off as a whiny fan, I just call it as I see it.

The season ain't over yet & I'm still as hopeful as anyone we go on a run & win every game, its just going to take a lot to go in our favor for that to happen.

LCE, we (myself included) have to remind ourselves of the abomination that was our program just 3 years ago. We were on the level of UVa, Wake and Duke. Let that sink in for a moment. We've come a very long way very fast, but we still need a little more time.

We still need more talent and time for the young talent that we already have to mature and develop. But it's coming. When your only question mark recruit over the past 2 cycles is Nigel Bethel, then you know we are on the right track in bringing in the type of talent we need. I'm honestly not worried from a talent standpoint. Just need a little more maturation time.

Also, we are finally back to playing the brand of football that Miami is known for -- fast and aggressive. We are emphasizing speed and athleticism in all phases again which is our only hope for success down here.

Now coaching -- this is my main concern. Richt as the CEO of the program needs to carefully and honestly assess his staff and determine if we have a championship-level staff in place. Because I will argue that we do not and some changes need to be made in order for us to take the next step. We are staffed fine for 10-3 and Top 15 but not for a playoff-caliber program.

To be clear, I think Richt is perfect for us as the head man in charge. But some of his lieutenants.... I've got my question marks, and I truly hope he isn't too blind, loyal and stubborn to make upgrades to his staff while he's upgrading our talent.

****, I remember the 1987 Fiesta Bowl Fatigues loss. We should have thumped Penn State and had another natty under our belts. Hurt me to my **** tender 15 year old heart at the time!

Can only imagine the venom Richt would feel today if he lost a championship game like that.
