Delaney will continue to play. 'Doing a good job'

Here's what happened on the TD that most people probably thought was Delaney's fault.

Delaney is lined-up with inside leverage on the #1 . He's giving up the outside. He's likely told to do this because we saw all of our CB's do this a handful of times during the game.

The #1 and #2 WR's go vertical. Delaney lets his WR got outside of him and down the sideline.

The LB carries the #2 WR vertical. Redwine rolls over and covers the #2 WR as well. Carter was likely supposed to roll over the top of Delaney and cover that vertical route from #1 but instead he stayed over the top of #2 . (which is why we have 3 guys covering #2 and nobody covering #1 )

I'm not ready to rag on Delaney just yet, not until we figure out WTF we're doing on defense.

Since when does it make sense to play inside leverage on what looks to be cover two with twins to your side of the field? Yea, the td is on Carter, but DD's alignment and technique was crap. He needs to get a hand on the WR....can't allow a free release.

All of our CB's played like that against that set. Delaney was obviously told to play that way.

Prob not cover 2 from presnap look, looks like it's cover 6 (4 to top of formation 2 on the bottom). Now we're we supposed to roll the coverage over toward Dee's way into a cover 3 look? I don't know. If we were it's on AC#5. If it was cover 6 then the TD was a bust on DD#3

I thought it was Cover-6 at first but then I kept seeing our CB's let the WR's run outside of them while they just sat in the flats. And the Safety that's on the Cover-2 side kept rolling over to the 2-WR side. (instead of playing Cover-2 on his side)

is this a case of asking Delaney to do something he's not comfortable or accustomed to doing? I didn't watch any Citadel games, but either he or our DBs seem to not do well with Zone coverage.

Looks that was to me as well Bandy and Young thrive in man coverage. I also think Delaney would be better if they would allow I'm to get his hands on the receiver hes not super fluid in and out of breaks but If he is able to dictate the route I think he would be above average.
But Many implements a lot of zone which I don't think our secondary personnel is comfortable yet.

I just went and watched this play a few times. Dee was lazy. I don't know of any coverage techniques that tells you to let the WR go untouched around your outside shoulder, especially 10 yards down the field. He needs to do what he can to reroute the WR.

With that being said the only way Dee was not in the wrong here is if they we're rolling the coverage to D's side, but based on the formation of the offense why would you do that? They had a WR, Slot, and an H-back to their side. I think this was cover 6 and Dee just forgot or didn't know he was in 6.

I know why a defense would look like some form of 2 high safety shell and roll to cover 3 towards the WR trip set, with your CB playing the flats to the trips, but based on the Offense formation i don't think that is the call here. I think Dee fell asleep, at worse he needs to get depth with the WR.

Richtes comments are to be expected and I don't need him to tell me Delaney sucks right now. Only thing you can hope for is he learns from this and gets better.

Letting a WR go untouched on an outside release is putting your safety in a tough position unless you have ed reed...

Would you have expected Richt to say Delaney sucks instead?
What were your expectations when he got the inevitable, if not obvious, question about him playing poorly?
If he says he is trash then you and other posters will accuse him of throwing his players under the bus.

He should have been bland, generic, innocuous, boring, and evasive.

'We all need to play better' type stuff. Now DD can rest on his laurels.

Why?
Delaney knows he is stinking it up and so does his coaches.
Get him coached up and playing better, he doesn't need to rip on him in public to make us fans feel better.

I agree that he should not rip him in public. However, he gave the dude a full-vouch. Never go full-vouch.

You should definitely try to get in touch with Richt to share these feelings. I am sure he is waiting on your opinion on how he should handle discussing his players with the media. He's only been doing it for 20-plus years and it is something that you've never done.

Ok fella, thx for sharing this incredulous notion.

A lot of it is scheme.. Diaz out here doing different **** than he did last year. Spread offense on the field but only two corners and both playing off 10 yards?? That gimmicky dorito bs is going to get him fired.

Odd thing is that he earned his FCS All-American honors beating up on the level of athletes that have given UM fits the first two games this season. Tells me the problem might not be all Delaney.

Agree totally with this. Diaz calling his second bad game. He has the players confused. Our safety play is no where on par with last year and that's showing up in this game and BC game.

When a guy who used to be a good CB suddenly starts spinning around like a clown his confidence is shot. He's not used to this stage, and he's shook as fck. I thought he was too heavy before the season started, but I got roasted for that. He looks sluggish, and he's got snakes in his head.

I remember you clearly quoting the picture and saying he looks like he's put on too much

and yes you did get roasted

I didn't know what to think at the time but he's having.. mobility problems

No actually I didn’t expect that. Just sit him down to never to see the field again would be preferable.,
