Defensive Rankings

Don't hang your hat on Lashlee fixing the offense as our golden ticket back. If he runs tempo the D will see the field more often, which means more opportunities to give up points. On top of that, despite what anyone thinks about Shaq and Pink , losing two four-year starters without missing a beat isn't going to happen. We're razor thin at CB and as of now the same ******* who called a 3-man rush, delayed blitz on 4th & 17 is still our DC. Fire his *** and throw a boatload of money at Charlie Strong or another established DC and I'd feel better about the D holding up its end.

The defense sucks versus actual football teams.

F*** the rankings. We all saw 4th & 17 at UNC, Virginia Tech's fullback looking like Larry Czonka, FIU, and Duke. LB and DB recruiting are crippling the roster.

Overhaul is needed with the defensive staff as well. Don't kid yourself for a second.

Yep, we’re the only ones. All the other top-ranked defenses made every play all year long. Never gave up crucial conversions or scores. In fact, I think they all pitched year-long shutouts and only failed to go undefeated because their offenses let them down.

Sh*t is a ******* facade. What was their rankings in the 4th quarter in games lost?

Our ineptitude offensively was a huge factor in that fact. Use Duke as an example. Here are our second half possessions in that game.

3 plays, 5 yards, punt
6 plays, 13 yards, punt
4 plays, 4 yards, FG
3 plays, -3 yards, punt
3 plays, -2 yards, punt
3 plays, 1 yard, punt
8 plays, 32 yards, punt
5 plays, 6 yards, fumble

Not a single possession of longer than 2:30, the majority no more than a minute long.

What D isn't going to get gassed by the fourth quarter?

Offense wins in college, take a look at SMU, ranked 110th in defense yet they won 10 games. If our defense performs at the same level
as last year and Lashlee is 75% of what they say he is, then we should expect nothing less than a 9 or 10 win season.

Time of possession is over-rated, and there's no guarantee we'd even get worse at that. Miami was #72 in FBS @ 29:47/game and SMU was #87 @ 28:52. One extra minute on the field is not going to turn our defense into a bad unit. The absolute worst team in the country was Utah State @ 26:02 and the best was Wisconsin @ 35:42. That not a huge difference either way despite what football mythology would have us believe.

Wait, so we didnt go 6-7? I guess we were better than I thought.

And we are still trailing App. State.
Canes had a 9-3 defense and a 3-9 offense. The D took a step back from their level of the last two years, but it was still pretty good. "Trailing App State" seems like a really arbitrary measurement. You could just as easily say Canes were "way ahead of Oklahoma."

6-7 is not an arbitrary assessment. Look at how the defense performed v. rank of the offense they faced. This D gets lit up by good offenses. If saying we are behind App state is arbitrary then whats the use of pointing to the rankings at all?

Defense is horrible.

We played CMU, BCU, FIU, Duke, GT man.
We also played UF, UVA, Louisville, and UNC which were all top-40. Defense was definitely down from last couple years level, but they weren't remotely horrible. You can look at weighted rankings, efficiency rankings, other advanced metrics, etc and Canes are consistently ranked around #25 on D at year's end.

I said using App State as the measuring stick was arbitrary, not our overall record. However, using our overall record to measure our defense is obviously a poor choice since the offense (which was objectively awful) contributes equally to that.

To your point about top offenses we faced, against the best 3 we gave up:
24 to UF (who averaged 33)
27 to Louisville (who averaged 33)
28 to UNC (who averaged 32)

So we didn't get "lit up" by any of them. The D played one awful game all year, giving up 42 to a VT team that averaged 30. That's an obvious outlier.
