No he doesn't. Theyre secondary makes ours look talented. Linebackers Michigan is a little better. Defensive line was bad. It was going down hill partially because brown was selling them on his type of players. East coast sleepers who he only hit on one in kwitty paye. He wanted vincent gray who makes dj ivey look like Patrick surtain. They have 5 guys who would be on our two deep out of their starters.he has better recruits at Michigan than we have here and he gets ran over by osu every year
we need a guy who does more with less
Yeah I don't get hiring strong or muschamp. That's like lsu hiring pelini. When's the last time they actually coordinated a defense? It's not 2010 anymore. They'd also want tons of cash. Not worth it imoBased on what they've done lately... keep Muschamp and Strong away from here. Muschamp just had the worst defense in the entire county with all of his own players and multiple "high-round" picks. Wasn't good at Auburn either. Strong is expired by 10-15 years imo but much did he learn at Alabama?
Realistic options for us to consider that would revamp what we're doing but still be in Manny's "comfort-zone" of TFL/Sacks/Havoc:
Jim Knowles (Oklahoma State) - Completely turned their defense around in 2 years after they hired him from Duke. Did wonders at Duke for several years with little to no NFL talent. They have fallen off big time since he left. Ivy League educated (Cornell) and was a HC there as well. On the older side (56 I think) but that might be what we need. He's doing this in the Big 12 defending the most modernized offenses in CFB.
Marcus Freeman (Cincinnati) - The hot young name. Upcomer who has done great things this year and his defensive metrics definitely back it up. Limited experience but will be a HC soon and we could be the next obvious step to get him there in 1-2-3 years.
David Reeves (UAB) - Been nominated for the Broyles Award many times. I was impressed with him game plan against us this year. Absolutely racked up TFL and Sack last year as one of the best defenses in CFB. Multiple NFL level players developed at a G5 school (even after the restart of the program). He's been with Clark for several years now dating back to Jacksonville State. Definitely a respected coach.
A friend of mine maintains a database of defensive rankings and trends for a group that essentially works as a support to schools and coaching search firms hiring coaches/coordinators/HC - Knowles has been at the top of his list since 2013 at Duke and a high choice prior to that. He went to Oklahoma State as a result of the data he sent to Gundy. He was highly recommended to many other jobs that didn't hire him because of charisma and personality fit I assume. The top defensive assistants in CFB right now are Alex Grinch, Dan Lanning, and Jim Leonard.
In his rankings and metrics this season - Freeman's defense at Cincinnati ranks #3 for 2020 (behind Jim Leonard at Wisconsin and Hankwitz at Northwestern), Reeves is top 12, and Knowles is around 15-20. Another name that was high-up he mentioned was Leavitt in the Top 10.
For comparison - Blake Baker and Miami are around 45-50 (the Pass D, RZ D, and 3rd down D rate average and we are still top 5 in TFL and top 30 in Sacks) and Muschamp/TRob and USCe are around 120 with the likes of Vanderbilt, Arizona, and Ole Miss.
It'd leave him free to be a head coach and not have to babysit baker. But for real...
Do y'all really think he'll fire Baker?
I mean, at the end of the day it's basically Manny's scheme. What makes us think he'll hire somebody who's that much different?
Self preservation?
I hope so.
He's retired and not coming back. We could just get Pittsburghs dc who runs narduzzis cover 4 press schemeMark Dantonio, NC winning DC at OSU, hired Pat Narduzzi as DC when he first got his HC gig. He completely abandoned his massively successful Saban defense in favor of a young guy. The result was like a decade of top ten defenses.
If Mark Dantonio, whose resume as a DC absolutely demolishes Manny’s, can let go of his ego and hire someone who doesn’t run HIS scheme, then Manny effing better.
Someone with realistic choices compared to all these big name has been head coaches who haven't been dc in years. I'd like to steal bates from pitt. Kill two birds with one stone.Randy Bates - Pitt (Formal Naval Officer and came over from Northwestern to be Narduzzi's DC - great experience working under Fitz and Narduzzi)
Jim Knowles - OK State (Spent several years as Duke's DC - really turned around the D at OK state to a top 20 unit)
David Reeves - UAB (Worked under Clark for several years dating back to Jacksonville State - good pedigree)
Brian Borland - Buffalo (Has good numbers running the D at Buffalo - prior to that spent several years at D3 national power Wisconsin White Water and won several national championships and won numerous awards for the best coordinator at the lower level - a DB specialist)
Glenn Schumann - Georgia (Co-DC at UGA - would take over there if Lanning took a HC job or he would follow and be Lanning's DC - Great teacher and comes from the Saban and Smart tree. Would be the only one on this list that would be a big transition in scheme to a 3-3-5 but definitely well regarded and a logical next step)
Brad Lambert - Marshall (Spent several years as the HC at Charlotte jumpstarting that program from the ground-up. Very bright coach that is a good teacher and is a good recruiter. I was impressed with Marshall's defense watching them a few times - besides the Rice debacle. One of the top defenses in the country this year and the former HC experience made me put him on this list)
Fran Brown - Rutgers (Would have been Manny's DC at Temple if he stayed. Ended up being a Co-DC there for a year and then went to Rutgers. Never called plays but he's going to be a DC in the future. Worked under some really good coaches from his days at Temple under Rhule and now under Schiano - DB specialist and great recruiter - would likely be a Co-DC here)
Tyler Santucci - Texas A&M (Coaches linebackers under Elko and is the hot name for a lot of places including ND and now Vandy - both trying to replicate the Mike Elko system and he's basically the last one to know it. Never been a coordinator but will be in the near future)
Zach Arnett - Miss State (Rising star in coaching ranks. Still under 35 i believe. Came to Miss State with Leach from SDSU where his defensive rankings speak for themselves. Would be one of my top 3 choices)
Other names from college ranks if we could fork out the money - Alex Grinch (Oklahoma), Marcus Freeman (Cincinnati), Jim Leonard (Wisconsin), Phil Parker (Iowa), Jon Heacock (Iowa State) - All of these names would cost a lot more than I think we would spend - except maybe Freeman but I expect him to get a big job like Michigan or hold out and ride with Fickell if/when he gets another job)
For the record - I am strongly against the retreads like Muschamp and Strong. If i had to pick between the 2 it would be Strong hoping he's made some adjustments from his time at Alabama. Both of their last few stops have been worse products than anything Manny has ever done judging a full season.
